Hoist the main sails! One of the greatest action-adventure franchises of all time is officially back on the streaming charts more than twenty years after its first installment. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl is setting sail with a heading to the top of Disney+’s lists.
The first installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is seeing a rapid rise on the streaming charts. According to FlixPatrol, the 2003 film is currently Disney+’s No. 1 most-streamed movie in the United States. This comes twenty-three years after the film first hit theaters, and nine years after the most recent Pirates film.
Pirates of the Caribbean Is One of Disney’s Greatest Film Franchises of All Time
Pirates of the Caribbean is unquestionably one of the greatest action-adventure franchises of all time. Bolstered by a career-defining performance from Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow, the franchise has transcended generations to become an all-time classic. The Curse of the Black Pearl proved successful enough to launch four sequels, each of which met financial success, if not critical acclaim.
As a testament to Pirates of the Caribbean‘s unmitigated success, Disney has spent the last twenty years trying to launch a replacement franchise, to no avail. The studio has released no shortage of Pirates of the Caribbean clones, from the massive sci-fi flop that was John Carter to the almost beat-for-beat remake that was Jungle Cruise. Through all this, the sea-faring franchise is the only one that found true success.
Is Pirates of the Caribbean 6 Happening?
The last Pirates of the Caribbean film, Dead Men Tell No Tales, was released in 2017. In the nine years since, audiences have been falling over themselves for more installments. While a sequel has been in development essentially since the last film’s release, it’s undergone multiple behind-the-scenes changes. As of 2026, Pirates of the Caribbean 6 is officially in development.
At one point, there were doubts that Johnny Depp would return as Captain Jack Sparrow. However, it now seems that Disney is planning to bring Depp back for another film, though it is unclear exactly when it would come out. There is also a spin-off film in development starring Margot Robbie, though some rumors claim that these plans have been combined with the as-yet-untitled sixth Pirates of the Caribbean film.
