For more than a decade, Minecraft fans have speculated about what an official sequel might look like. While Mojang has continuously expanded the original game with major updates, new biomes, mechanics, and features, many players have remained curious about the possibility of a fresh start built with modern technology and a new creative vision.

Minecraft 2 discussions have resurfaced repeatedly over the years, though Mojang has consistently maintained that Minecraft is designed to evolve from the base game experience rather than be replaced, which makes the prospect of a true sequel seem increasingly unlikely. Even so, interest in a new game set within the Minecraft universe has never disappeared.

And after a massive new reveal at this past weekend’s Summer Game Fest, Minecraft gamers are officially getting a brand-new sequel this summer, set to arrive in September 2026 (via YouTube).

This year’s Summer Game Fest was unquestionably one for the record books, with dozens of incredible reveals from across various IPs in the gaming world. Minecraft fans in particular got an extremely exciting new announcement in the form of a brand-new sequel with Minecraft Dungeons 2, set to arrive on Tuesday, September 29, 2026.

For the uninitiated, Minecraft Dungeons is a dungeon-crawling action RPG set in the Minecraft universe, where instead of mining and foraging, etc., players partake in fast-paced combat and loot collecting in a co-op multiplayer-based adventure. Players explore themed levels, battle mobs, collect weapons and artifacts, and customize builds without traditional class restrictions.

Dungeons is a popular revamp of the beloved Minecraft world that’s more accessible to fans of arcade-style gameplay, especially in co-op, while keeping the franchise’s charm, humor, recognizable enemies, and satisfying progression loop. The official new sequel promises to take things up a notch, taking players on “a quest to stop a new evil from causing chaos.”

This means clashing with menacing foes in explosive encounters and fighting your way through hordes of mobs that will do everything in their power to stop you. In classic Minecraft Dungeons fashion, you’ll be able to craft your perfect hero with items you’ll acquire on your trip, including everything from weapons and armor to artifacts, talismans, and other legendary gear!
