Nintendo released version 22.5.0 of the Switch 2 and original Switch operating systems, which users can now download and install on their consoles. The latest version of the Switch 2 operating system includes a few features that some users can take advantage of, along with some general improvements to keep the console stable.
Although most Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 console updates focus on system stability as more games are released for both consoles, some updates also include new features that change how each console performs. For example, Nintendo’s 22.0.0 firmware update added Handheld Boost Mode to Switch 2 consoles, which allows some original Switch titles to run at 1080p in handheld mode at the cost of a shorter battery life. Handheld Boost Mode can be toggled on or off from the Switch 2’s system settings menu.

Compared to the Switch 2 firmware update, the original Switch saw a few notable changes to the Nintendo eShop. The layout of the Switch’s eShop client has been redesigned to look like the Switch 2 version. Rather than being met with a loading screen animation, Switch users will automatically see the Nintendo eShop user interface. However, some features such as the “For You” tab remain exclusive to the Switch 2 eShop. Users can also rewind or advance fullscreen videos from the News and eShop apps on the Switch by pressing the ZL and ZR buttons. A Basic Dark version of the Switch eShop’s UI is also included with the 22.5.0 firmware update.
Additionally, Switch users can set a verification PIN when accessing the Nintendo eShop and any saved payment methods.
Switch 2 firmware version 22.5.0 was released nearly a week before the launch of the highly-anticipated Star Fox reboot. As a remake of Star Fox 64, the upcoming title will feature enhanced cutscenes, an updated graphical style, and some multiplayer modes for players to enjoy. Star Fox launches exclusively on Switch 2 on June 25, though interested fans can try out a free demo before buying.

Given that each Nintendo console firmware update mentions system stability as part of the listed changes, it is highly recommended that Switch 2 users make sure their console is on version 22.5.0 to ensure a smooth experience with Star Fox and future titles. With a looming price increase on Switch 2 consoles set to take effect on September 1, it remains to be seen if Nintendo will include more firmware changes before the deadline.
