Michael Fassbender’s Hit Spy Thriller Is Officially Moving Streaming Homes In Just 2 Weeks

Those interested in watching Michael Fassbender’s most recent spy thriller will find it on a new streaming home in two weeks.

Since beginning his professional acting career in 2001 with the HBO miniseries Band of Brothers, Fassbender has built an impressive resume of movies and TV shows. That lineup of work. From his time as Magneto in the later X-Men movies to playing Azazeal in the British TV series Hex, the actor has entertained audiences in various ways. Fassbender has especially done well in the realm of crime and spy thrillers.

For example, in 2013, he starred as The Counselor’s titular protagonist opposite Penélope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Javier Bardem, and Brad Pitt. Fassbender will also soon be seen reprising CIA officer Brandon Colby in The Agency season 2 on Paramount+. Then, there’s the actor’s most recent spy thriller movie, which will switch streaming services soon.

Black Bag, which is currently available on Prime Video, will move to Peacock on July 2. This isn’t the first time that the Fassbender-led movie has been available on that platform, and Peacock is a fitting home since it was released by Universal Pictures and Focus Features. Those studios are part of NBCUniversal, which also counts Peacock among its brands.

Directed by Steven Soderbergh and written by David Koepp, Black Bag sees Fassbender playing George Woodhouse, who works in the United Kingdom government’s National Cyber Security Centre alongside his wife, Cate Blanchett’s Kathryn St. Jean. Their married life hits a hitch when George is assigned to investigate a list of suspected traitors, with Kathryn being among them. The guilty party leaked a top-secret software programming code called Severus.

Fassbender and Blanchett are joined in Black Bag by Marisa Abela, Tom Burke, Naomie Harris, Regé-Jean Page, and Pierce Brosnan. The movie opened in domestic theaters on March 14, the same day as Paramount Pictures’ Novocaine, A24’s Opus, and Neon’s The Actor, among others.

The spy thriller was met with critical acclaim, earning 96% on Rotten Tomatoes. ScreenRant’s review of Black Bag described it as being “engaging and refreshing precisely because it is so personal, raising the stakes to the highest level without having to be extravagant in its set pieces.”

Conversely, Black Bag failed to impress commercially. Made off a reported budget between $50–$60 million, the movie only made $43.8 million worldwide. Soderbergh expressed frustration about Black Bag‘s box office performance, saying that “if a mid-level budget, star-driven movie can’t seem to get people over the age of 25 years old to come out to theaters — if that’s truly a dead zone — then that’s not a good thing for movies.”

As far as its streaming performance goes, Black Bag quickly became a hit when it dropped on Prime Video, so it will likely experience similar success on Peacock. As for Fassbender, with The Agency season 2 premiering on June 21, he’s also going to star in the Netflix historical series Kennedy as patriarch Joseph Kennedy Sr.
