Melissa Barrera Wanted Scary Movie 6 Role, Marlon Wayans Explains Why It Didn’t Happen

After the controversial departure of Melissa Barrera from the Scream franchise, many horror fans were hoping to see her lampooning the horror series with a role in the new Scary Movie. Even Barrera had publicly advocated for an appearance in the film, but as fans have now seen upon its release, such a cameo did not come to be.

Recently speaking with Variety, Marlon Wayans revealed the real reason why Barrera did not show up in Scary Movie, aka Scary Movie 6. He says that he was never made aware of Barrera’s desire to appear in the parody film, otherwise he would have reached out to her about bringing her on board. While that “masterful cameo” didn’t come to be in the sixth Scary Movie, Wayans is keeping the door open for the appearance to happen in a potential sequel.

Maybe Melissa Barrera Can Be in Scary Movie 7

“I wish I’d heard about that,” Wayans said. “That would have been a lot of fun. I definitely would’ve tried to make that work. That would’ve been a masterful cameo. Maybe for Part 7!”

Barrera played Sam Carpenter in the fifth and sixth Scream movies. As the daughter of original Ghostface killer Billy Loomis, she was a very significant character. She was set to return for Scream 7, but things changed when Barrera publicly showed support for Palestine amid the Hamas war. Spyglass Media Group subsequently announced that Barrera would not return for Scream 7, at which point the sequel underwent a complete creative overhaul.

Meanwhile, the Scary Movie series has been poking fun at Scream since the very beginning. When it was announced that Scary Movie 6 was in the works, Barrera was asked about the possibility of getting involved during a 2024 interview with Inverse. She confirmed that she would be interested in appearing in the parody film, but even if that call never came, she was looking forward to its release, as she is a fan of the previous installments.

“I always loved those movies,” she said at the time. “When I saw it announced, I was like, ‘Oh, that would be fun. That would be so fun to do.’ They have the iconic cast that did it, so we’ll see what goes on with that. I’m just excited to see a new one.”

The new Scary Movie didn’t impress the critics, but that doesn’t make it a failure. None of the previous films in the franchise have ever earned a positive approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, so it wasn’t unusual for the critics to be unkind to the new movie. The good news is that audiences are responding to the sequel much more positively, and it’s expected to gross $45-50 million for its debut weekend, which would make it the No. 1 movie at the box office.

Scary Movie is now playing in theaters.
