Matt Damon’s $1.6B James Bond Replacement Gets Encouraging Update 1 Year After Creative Shakeup

Matt Damon is always caught up with one project or another, but he hasn’t forgotten his long-running Jason Bourne franchise. Although the last film came out in 2016, Damon just shared an encouraging update.

Jason Bourne 6 has been stuck in development for ten years. In 2025, the franchise experienced a major shakeup, as Universal Pictures lost the rights before regaining them later that year. In a new interview with Parade, Matt Damon confirmed there is still interest in Jason Bourne 6, and he’s open to hearing plot ideas.

Jason Bourne 6 Might Still Happen

The actor is currently promoting his Water.org nonprofit’s new initiative, Get Blue, but he also had the time to address one of his biggest franchises. He also clarified that the fact that there is no new movie isn’t because of lack of trying.

“We’re always looking to try to get another one of those because we loved it, everyone who worked on them,” Damon teased. “So there’s always some attempt going on to write, to come up with a new story. So if you have anything, let us know.”

The Jason Bourne franchise, just like James Bond, follows the world of espionage and is based on bestselling novels. Damon’s action franchise is based on Robert Ludlum’s character, and it has been around for two decades.

The first film, The Bourne Identity, premiered in 2002, with Doug Liman at the helm. Paul Greengrass directed the second, third, and fifth entry, with Tony Gilroy helming the fourth entry, The Bourne Legacy, which is a spinoff starring Jeremy Renner. The fourth film is the only one Damon is not starring in, as he refused to appear in the film if Greengrass didn’t direct it.

The Jason Bourne franchise was a major commercial success, grossing $1.66 billion worldwide against a budget estimated around $500 million, just enough to be profitable. The only film that didn’t exceed expectations was the fourth one, which grossed $280.3 million against a $125 million budget.

Over the years, there have been a lot of talks about a potential sixth film, with Damon’s return status unclear. In a 2023 report, Deadline claimed Damon was to be approached once a script was in order, as it was reported Edward Berger was helming a new entry.

In 2024, Damon addressed the film on The Late Show, “He said he had an idea. So he’s working on it, so I’m looking, I’m as anxious as you are to see if this thing – I hope it’s great, and that we can do it.”

Damon’s new words don’t mention Greengrass as part of the project. In 2024, he told Prince William, “Not for me, they need somebody younger, I’ve done my bit. But I hope they get somebody great and young to do it, I think they’re in the process.”

It would be interesting to see if a potential Jason Bourne return would clash with the James Bond franchise. Amazon MGM Studios now owns the rights to the spy series, and it’s officially rebooting it. There is no actor attached, but Dune‘s Denis Villeneuve is helming the new entry, with Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight penning the script. Since no offer has been made, there is no production window, so the film will likely premiere in late 2027 or even 2028.
