Marvel Just Revealed 1 New Magic-User Debuting In Avengers: Doomsday

Marvel Studios has just teased the introduction of another formidable magic-user in Avengers: Doomsday. As the Russo brothers’ next Marvel Cinematic Universe movie, there is a huge amount of anticipation surrounding Avengers: Doomsday. Since the directing duo were confirmed to be returning to lead Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars in 2024, we’ve had many exciting announcements, but the latest might be the most game-changing for the movies’ villain.

Alongside the Russo brothers, Robert Downey Jr. was confirmed to be returning to the MCU in 2024. He’ll be debuting as Victor Von Doom, the ruler of Latveria known as Doctor Doom, however, rather than reprising his role of Tony Stark’s Iron Man. Doom’s backstory is expected to be explored in far more detail than Thanos’ was in Avengers: Infinity War, and a new tease from Marvel Studios has already started to lay these foundations.

Some were disappointed when teases from Marvel and the Russo brothers about something major to do with Avengers: Doomsday turned out to just be a Doctor Doom-themed pop-up coffee shop at South by Southwest London in June 2026. A branch of Flying Horse Coffee was transformed into “Dom Latveria Coffee,” and fans could purchase Doctor Doom-themed coffee items and get their bags of coffee signed by the Russo brothers.

Although some — especially those who had been expecting Avengers: Doomsday’s first full trailer — expressed disappointment, this rebranding provided some brilliant teases for the upcoming crossover event. The names of the different types of coffee, specifically, included references to Doctor Doom’s history in Marvel Comics, including “Cynthia’s Blend,” named after Doom’s own mother, Cynthia Von Doom.

Other coffees were named “Fortunov,” referencing Vladimir Fortunov, the Baron who ruled Latveria before Doom, and “The Rapprochement,” referring to the Latverian national holiday of forgiveness. There’s also a coffee named “Zefiro,” which is the name of the Romani clan that Doom comes from, and “Hassenstadt Dark,” which was the former name of the Latverian capital before Doom changed it to Doomstadt. The mention of Cynthia Von Doom, however, is the most exciting inclusion.

Cynthia Von Doom Is Important to Doctor Doom’s Story In Marvel Comics

First introduced to Marvel Comics in 1971’s Astonishing Tales #8, Cynthia Von Doom (née Crisan) was a Romani woman living in Latveria who married Werner Von Doom and had a son, Victor. Far beyond a simple backstory, Cynthia Von Doom was also a skilled sorceress, having trained in the magical arts by Djordji “Dizzy the Hun” Zindelo Hungaros, a Zefiro mystic. She used her skills to explore the dark arts, however, and learned how to communicate with demons.

This brought her into contact with Mephisto, who recently made his MCU debut, played by Sacha Baron Cohen in Ironheart. Cynthia sold her soul to Mephisto, who granted her enough power to bring down Latveria’s tyrannical ruler, Baron Fortunov, and kill his men. She could not control this power, however, and ultimately killed many innocent people, too, including children. She allowed herself to be killed out of shame and guilt, and her soul was trapped with Mephisto.

This formed the motivation behind much of Doctor Doom’s striving for power and influence, as he hoped to become formidable enough to save his mother’s soul from Mephisto. The demon eventually freed Cynthia’s soul by accident during a battle with Doom and Doctor Strange, allowing her to move on to a better afterlife, but Doom was twisted nevertheless. With Cynthia having been teased ahead of Avengers: Doomsday’s release, it’s possible we could see this story unfold in the upcoming movie.

Avengers: Doomsday Is the Perfect Place for Cynthia Von Doom’s Debut

While Thanos was a formidable villain in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, his backstory and motivations were only briefly mentioned. Doctor Doom, with Robert Downey Jr. in the driver’s seat, is expected to get a lot more development. This could easily include Marvel spotlighting Doom’s early relationship with his mother, her freeing Latveria from Fortunov’s rule, and Doom’s attempts to save her soul from Mephisto.

After Ironheart, this could bring Sacha Baron Cohen’s captivating and sinister antagonist back into action, while also expanding on the world of magic and sorcery in the MCU. We’ve already seen some incredible magic-users in the franchise, including Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), the Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), Loki (Tom Hiddleston), Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn), and more. Cynthia Von Doom would be a fantastic addition to this line-up.

Just as Wanda Maximoff was corrupted by her magic in WandaVision and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Cynthia Von Doom can undergo the same transformation in Avengers: Doomsday, acting as the perfect mirror. The Scarlet Witch has been rumored to return alongside Doctor Doom, so this connection would be great to establish, while Cynthia Von Doom’s appearance could explain much of Doctor Doom’s own motivations and methods, humanizing the much-anticipated supervillain.
