Marvel Is Relaunching the Avengers With “Earth’s Mightiest Survivors” Following Its “Armageddon” Crossover

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Marvel’s Armageddon!

Marvel just revealed its next Avengers roster, and while it’s a stacked lineup of mostly familiar faces, the team’s tagline doesn’t bode well for the characters who aren’t announced for the team. This version of the Avengers are “Earth’s Mightiest Survivors,” implying that the body count for Marvel’s upcoming Armageddon event is going to be even higher than expected.

Marvel officially confirmed that its flagship Avengers series is relaunching this fall in the aftermath of Armageddon. The ongoing title will be written by Chip Zdarsky, the architect of Armageddon. It will feature art by Marco Checchetto. The creative team’s Avengers #1 is coming in November, after Armageddon wreaks havoc on the Marvel Universe through the summer and into the fall.

The series is set to star Spider-Man, Wolverine, Captain Marvel, Luke Cage, and Daredevil. Curiously, Marvel did hold back the name of one of “Earth’s Mightiest Survivors.” That’s because it is a hero readers haven’t met yet, who is “set to make their explosive debut soon.”

Beyond that, the announcement effectively paints a target on every other Marvel hero’s back heading into Armageddon. Marvel has been teasing the crossover as its biggest storyline in 20 years, and a major paradigm shift for all its heroes, but now, more than ever, it seems like that’s going to mean saying goodbye to some iconic characters.

After over half a year of hype, Marvel’s Armageddon event is finally getting under way in June, and already it seems poised to live up to its name. The event will pit Red Hulk and his army of Hulks against Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, and from the looks of it, the result is going to be carnage. No, not the symbiote, but rather a war of attrition that is going to claim the lives of some A-list superheroes.

The Avengers’ Next Bold Era Begins This Summer, Revealing All-New Heroes

Marvel is setting the stage for the Avengers’ next bold era, with summer teasing major changes and the rise of all-new heroes.

The announcement of November’s Avengers #1 tells fans which A-listers are going to survive Armageddon, but it also confirms that the future of the Marvel Universe they’re going to face will be a bleak one. Artist Marco Checchetto’s cover for Avengers #1 shows the team, sans its new TBD member, in battle positions atop a mountain of skulls, with literal scorched Earth in the background.

And, Marvel is making it clear that this version of the Avengers will truly live up to their name. As author Chip Zdarsky put it: “after what happens in Avengers: Armageddon, this lineup is angry as hell and ready to avenge.”

Marvel Fans Knew “Armageddon” Would Change The Marvel Universe, But Will It Be Bloodier Than Expected?

“Earth’s Mightiest Survivors” Suggests Yes

“Avengers is a book that should lead the Marvel Universe, where big things happen and surprises keep hitting,” Chip Zdarsky told Marvel, explaining his goal for his new Avengers series. Meanwhile, Marvel Editor Will Moss said of the series:

Chip and Marco have come up with such an exciting direction for this new volume of Avengers, striking just the right balance of quality AND spectacle, of pitch-perfect characterization AND shocking takes, of a sense of legacy AND a true trailblazing spirit. Chip and Marco’s Avengers is going to be the heart of the Marvel Universe going forward—trust me, you won’t want to miss a beat. Just wait till you learn the full roster…

Most Marvel readers expected an Avengers relaunch coming out of Armageddon, but the confirmation that the crossover’s author, Zdarsky, will continue to helm the franchise in its aftermath is an encouraging sign for fans.

It shows that Zdarsky is committed to an extended tenure at Marvel, and that the publisher is thinking long-term with the entire Marvel Universe. That said, the question now, leading into Armageddon’s launch, is what is going to become of a host of other iconic Avengers, such as Iron Man, Hulk, Hawkeye, and more, as Marvel potentially prepares to kill off some top-tier characters.

Avengers #1 will be available November 2026 from Marvel Comics.

What do you think, Marvel fans? Are you stoked for the Avengers relaunch coming later this year?
