Man of Tomorrow Subtly Improves Superman’s DCU Costume

It has been almost a year since David Corenswet made his debut as Clark Kent in James Gunn’s Superman, the first theatrical installment of the rebooted DC Universe. The release of Craig Gillespie’s Supergirl is now just a few weeks away, and the trailers have indicated that Clark — or Kal-El, to use his Kryptonian name — will make at least a brief appearance in his cousin’s story. He is set to play a more prominent role in the 2027 film Man of Tomorrow, which is currently in the midst of filming.

Gunn recently took to social media to share an official image of Lex Luthor in high-tech power armor, but some unofficial photos of Lex’s nemesis have begun to surface online as well. Contrary to earlier rumors, Man of Tomorrow will evidently not reuse the Superman suit that Corenswet wore in the 2025 film, and his new costume follows in the footsteps of his preceding live-action Supermen.

Man of Tomorrow Will Refine Superman’s DCU Design

At first glance, the leaked set photos of the Man of Tomorrow costume look the same as Corenswet’s previous Superman suit, but upon closer inspection, several changes became apparent. The most noticeable difference between the two is the shape of the collar; the Man of Tommorow suit has a more exaggerated neckline, with a deeper cutout in the front to expose more of his throat. This makes it even more reminiscent of Superman’s New 52 suit from the comics, though there is still no red lining.

Disciplined, relentless, and driven by a grief that never fully heals. You’ve built yourself into something formidable not through luck or cosmic accident, but through sheer, grinding will. You plan further ahead than anyone else in the room and trust fewer of them. The darkness you carry isn’t weakness — it’s your greatest weapon, and your most dangerous blind spot. But beneath the armor, you still believe in justice. That belief is what separates you from the monsters you fight.

Powerful beyond measure, yet defined by your humility. You were raised to believe that the measure of a person is what they do with what they’re given — and you’ve taken that lesson to heart. The world looks to you as a symbol, and the weight of that is something you carry quietly. You could impose your will on everything, and you choose not to. That choice, made every day, is the most heroic thing about you.

A warrior forged in honor, guided by truth. You came to this world not born into its compromises, and that perspective gives you a clarity that cuts through politics, spin, and fear. You fight hard, hold the line without flinching, and refuse to let injustice be normalized around you. People are sometimes surprised by your compassion — they expect the sword and forget the heart it serves. You are both, in perfect, formidable balance.

Quick, warm, and far more capable than your jokes let on. You use humor as a shield and velocity as a solution, but your greatest gift isn’t speed — it’s heart. You feel everything deeply and act faster than most people think. The people around you don’t always realize how much you carry, how much you process in the quiet between seconds. You make the impossible look easy, and you do it without making anyone feel small for being slower than you.

Chosen because your will is extraordinary. The ring didn’t create you — it recognized you. Your power is literally your imagination and your resolve, which means your ceiling is whatever you believe it to be. You can be reckless, and you can be arrogant, but your capacity for growth is equally limitless. You operate on a cosmic scale but never forget the small things worth protecting. In the universe’s darkest sectors, you are the light.

The Superman emblem maintains its Kingdom Come-inspired shape from the 2025 film, but it is now higher on Corenswet’s chest and possibly larger as well, rendering the House of El’s crest a more prominent part of the design. His sleeves still extend to partially cover his hands, again resembling the New 52 suit, but they seem to have been trimmed down somewhat. In fact, the entire suit appears slightly slimmer.

The dim lighting of the set photos make it difficult to judge the colors of the Man of Tomorrow suit, especially since the 2025 film was heavily color graded, but the yellow of the new costume seems to have more of a golden hue. Lastly, Clark now has longer hair, more closely resembling Henry Cavill’s iteration of the character. Overall, the new Superman suit is a refinement rather than a major overhaul, which is the same approach taken by the DC Extended Universe and the Arrowverse.

Previous Superman Actors Have Worn Multiple Costumes

Just as Man of Tomorrow will subtly adjust the 2025 Superman suit, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice made some small but impactful changes to Cavill’s Man of Steel suit. It featured a smaller emblem, a brighter color palette, a different belt, and heavier muscle padding. Justice League then brightened the colors even further and made the metallic sheen more noticeable.

Meanwhile, on the small screen, Tyler Hoechlin underwent a similar process. His costume changed drastically between the Supergirl show and the first season of Superman & Lois, but subsequent seasons of the latter made minor tweaks like the DCEU did. Over the course of the Arrowverse, the shape of his boots changed, his emblem became a three-dimensional piece separate from the rest of his suit, and his muscle padding was lessened.

These fine adjustments allowed Cavill’s and Hoechlin’s costumes to gradually evolve while maintaining their unique identities, and Corenswet’s suits are now continuing that tradition. The Man of Tomorrow suit may not differ much from Superman’s previous DCU outings, but it addresses some of the biggest fan complaints. The collar, sleeves, and emblem of the older costume were all common points of criticism. The new suit will surely not please everyone, but it shows a willingness to iterate and slowly move towards the perfect Superman design.

The updated suit may also provide some benefits beyond aesthetics. In 2025, shortly before Superman premiered, Corenswet told Deadline that the costume was uncomfortably tight, calling it “claustrophobic.” That is unfortunately inevitable when wearing a body-conforming suit like Superman’s, but the issue may be partially alleviated in Man of Tomorrow. Less material on Corenswet’s hands and throat will surely lessen that oppressive feeling.

Man of Tomorrow’s New Costume Could Retcon Superman

It is unclear whether the Man of Tomorrow suit will be a canonical change to Clark’s costume in the DCU. Some superheroes, such as Batman or Marvel’s Iron Man, frequently update their gear, but that is not the case for Superman. In the comics, he typically only changes his costume for temporary situations, such as when he donned a black and silver suit after his resurrection in Action Comics #689 to better absorb solar radiation.

Since Man of Tomorrow‘s suit is so similar to that from the 2025 Superman film, it could simply be a retconned version of the same design rather than an in-universe change. Gunn retconned multiple notable events from the first season of Peacemaker when bringing the series into the DCU, so changing Superman’s costume would be minor by comparison.

The answer to this question likely depends on the origin of Superman’s suit in the DCU. It might be Kryptonian like in Man of Steel, in which case it would be difficult to canonically adjust or replace the suit. However, if it was instead created by Martha Kent like in the comics, it makes sense that Clark would eventually need a new costume instead of repeatedly repairing the same suit. The latest Supergirl trailer implied Clark chose the colors of his costume, which would point towards terrestrial origins for the suit.

Gunn’s approach to Superman’s costume differs from many of the DCU’s other characters. Peacemaker received a noticeable redesign in the second season of his series, wearing a darker, less goofy costume with an inverted emblem. Supergirl’s costume in her standalone film also differs from her cameo in Superman, featuring a new belt, a different material for her skirt, and taller boots.

For Superman, however, Gunn has chosen to slightly modify the original design. The official showcase of the Man of Tomorrow suit may reveal some new details, because the leaked set photos were dark and partially obscured, but judging from the rest of the costume, there will not be any major surprises. The continuation of this Superman tradition is yet another reason to be excited about Man of Tomorrow and the rest of the DCU’s future.
