James Gunn’s Superman suit change confirmation has some major implications for the DC Universe and its road forwards from Man of Tomorrow onward. As the second movie to star Superman in the DCU timeline, the story of Man of Tomorrow is naturally a major one for the franchise, particularly because of the exciting ways it follows on from the 2025 Superman.
We already knew that Lex Luthor would be getting his own suit upgrade thanks to the set photo reveal showing that his warsuit would be appearing in Man of Tomorrow, which is itself decidedly exciting given it means Luthor can be an even bigger player in the DCU and within Man of Tomorrow‘s fights. However, it’s also now been confirmed that Superman himself will also be getting a different suit in the upcoming DCU movie.
Naturally, with the subject of Superman’s on-screen suits being a major subject of conversation for fans for decades now, this matter is a decidedly big one for the DCU itself. Indeed, given Superman is one of the first DCU heroes who is able to get a suit change to begin with, what happens here will no doubt help decide how every other DCU hero’s costume is handled going forward for the franchise.
James Gunn’s Superman Suit Change Confirmation Means The DCU Can Keep Changing Its Heroes’ Costumes
Following the reveal of new Man of Tomorrow set photos featuring David Corenswet’s Superman, fans took to social media to discuss whether the suit seen here was the same as the design used throughout Superman.
Thankfully for anyone on the fence about the matter, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn confirmed the suit Superman has in Man of Tomorrow suit will be different, replying to a comment on Threads about whether the costumes were identical by stating “No not the exact same.“
Changing the Superman suit from Superman to Man of Tomorrow appears to establish that the DCU will be following a classic superhero movie tradition and adjusting and upgrading the suits of its heroes from film to film – a move that would make sense based on the DCU’s focus on its heroes’ personal journeys and growth, and since different suits open up a world of further merchandise potential for the franchise.
Man Of Tomorrow’s Superman Suit Changes Avoid A Key Superhero Movie Complaint
Interestingly, if the upgraded Superman suit is indeed the one seen in the Man of Tomorrow set photos, it appears relatively few adjustments have been made to its design – or, otherwise, that the altered version of the suit will appear in the film later down the line. Either way, this means the change in costume won’t be a major redesign that comes out of nowhere, regardless of whatever eventuality becomes reality.
This is promising because it appears to support the idea that any alterations to superhero costumes – be that for Superman or otherwise – will either be more small-scale changes done to help create a sense of time passing and heroes becoming more established, or larger decisions with in-universe explanations for them, justifying more substantial suit tweaks.
With the drastic alterations made to hero suits with little to no explanation between movies being a subject of audience confusion and sometimes contempt in the world of the superhero genre, this particular trajectory is one that seems promising for the DC Universe and its path forward, since the decisions made with Superman‘s suit and any changes with it are sure to influence how the wider DC hero roster is handled.
