One of the biggest and most lastingly famous animated trilogies of all time is leaving Netflix at the start of next month, giving audiences limited time to enjoy the movies on the platform before they exit it. Netflix’s movie roster has a wide assortment of animated releases on it, with this category being one that’s seen some major successes over the years that establish it as one of the streaming service’s most important.
Given animated movies like KPop Demon Hunters and Swapped have garnered millions of hours of watchtime on Netflix over the course of a staggeringly short amount of time – and classic animated movie offerings from decades prior are still a consistently viable prospect for the platform to add to its library given their universal appeal – it’s no surprise that a wealth of new and classic animated movies are maintained as a core part of Netflix’s film selection.
However, given the sheer magnitude of movies and shows on the platform, no film or film series is ever permanently attached to the streaming platform, and it’s not uncommon for even major movie series to arrive and leave the service’s roster. This is exactly the case with one of the biggest film series that’s set to leave Netflix in a matter of weeks.
The Madagascar Trilogy Is Set To Leave Netflix In A Few Weeks
After being an easy movie series for viewers to turn to for a light all-ages-appropriate watch on Netflix for some time, the Madagascar trilogy is set to leave Netflix on July 1st alongside a range of other releases (as per What’s On Netflix), meaning the next few weeks offer the last chance for viewers to catch the films on the platform before they are no longer accessible there.
This is particularly notable given the original two Madagscar movies were some of the biggest animated films of the 2000s – with the original 2005 Madagascar and 2008 sequel managing to both become the sixth highest grossing movie of their respective release years – and since Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted also stuck the landing, becoming DreamWorks’ highest grossing non-Shrek film when it released in 2012.
As such, the Madagascar trilogy leaving Netflix is still a fairly big deal, especially for families and the like who have previously considered it a dependable go-to repeat watch on the platform. Interestingly, the Madagscar movies’ time on the platform could still help the franchise’s next chapter unfold.
The Madagascar Movie’s Streaming Second Life Means Madagascar 4 Could Still Happen
While Madagascar 4 was initially referenced as a possibility all the way back in 2010, the film has yet to come to fruition, despite being previously scheduled for release in 2018 as per announcements in 2014 before the movie’s release date was removed indefinitely (as per Deadline).
Given the release delay is thought to be a result of DreamWorks’ major restructuring after the sub-par results of several films, including the 2014 Madagascar spinoff Penguins of Madagascar, it makes sense that there’s been some reluctance to delve further into the Madagascar franchise, since the spinoff seemed as though it would be an assured hit beforehand given the popularity of the wisecracking avians.
As such, it’s interesting to note that Madagascar 4‘s best chance of becoming reality this much later on would be down to the original trilogy’s streaming success on platforms like Netflix, meaning where the series becomes available next – and how it fares there – could well be the difference between whether a new installment emerges for the series or not.
