Nearly two decades after it first premiered, Avatar: The Last Airbender remains one of the most beloved animated series ever made. Blending rich world-building and surprisingly mature storytelling, the Nickelodeon classic continues to attract new generations of fans while maintaining a devoted following among those who grew up with beloved characters like Aang, Katara, Sokka, Zuko, and more.
Further, hype for the franchise is only growing as Avatar Studios prepares to expand the universe in major ways. This fall, Paramount+ will debut The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender, an animated feature film focused on the Gaang as young adults, while the new sequel series Avatar: Seven Havens is currently slated to arrive in 2027.
However, it’s not all great news, as fans recently received a disappointing update when Paramount Skydance officially canceled its long-anticipated AAA Avatar: The Last Airbender RPG, ending hopes for what had been described as the franchise’s biggest video game project. That said, fans will want to mark their calendars for Avatar: Voyage of the Unity, a brand-new RPG taking us back to the Roku Era this October (via Kickstarter).
Voyage of the Unity is an officially licensed new expansion for the beloved Avatar Legends: The Roleplaying Game that absolutely demolished its Kickstarter funding goal earlier this year and reached a mind-blowing half a million dollars in pledges. The expansion is expecting fulfillments for backers in September 2026, but is available for pre-order via GameNerdz with an expected October ship date.
This epic expansion by Beadle & Grimm’s for Avatar Legends: The Roleplaying Game from Magpie Games is set in the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender, and expands the original world of Legends by exploring the Four Nations during the Roku Era. It includes “five linked adventures that take place both on the Unity, a mammoth seafaring research vessel built as a joint venture by the Four Nations, and at various ports of call around the world.”
According to the Voyage of the Unity description, “These five adventures can be played individually, or as a campaign that takes the companions from complete unknowns on their first journey to respected members of the crew. Journeying across the Four Nations, the Unity offers players and GMs a unique frame for a campaign—a globetrotting set of adventures that showcase everything the Four Nations have to offer.”
The release also includes “an amazing collection of in-world elements and game aids to help GMs and players create the most epic and immersive game possible,” which is why it’s not surprising that it annihilated its original $50k Kickstarter goal by 10x the amount. And if you were worried about missing out on the epic expansion, the Voyage of the Unity Retail Edition will release in all major outlets and includes the following:
- 5 connected adventures
- Guide to the Unity booklet
- Avatar: Legends Quick-Start Rulebook
- NEW Roku-Era World Map (poster-sized, printed on heavy high-quality paper)
- All 7 saddle-stitched booklets and map are included in a PU leather slipcase
All told, Avatar Legends: The Roleplaying Game and the Voyage of the Unity expansion are essential additions to any longtime Avatar: The Last Airbender fan, and are the perfect way to immerse yourself in the beloved universe in a completely original way.
