Fans of the Wizarding World are awaiting Hogwarts Legacy 2 along with the all-new Harry Potter series adaptation that’s on the way to HBO. Now, there’s something else to look forward to as another new game has been officially announced.
Called Harry Potter: Defenders of Hogwarts, the tabletop RPG is developed by MinaLima, the graphic designers of the Harry Potter movie universe. Award-winning industrial designer David Waterman is also working on the game design. Recommended for 2-5 players aged 13 and up, the game’s rounds will typically last about 90 minutes. Harry Potter: Defenders of Hogwarts will be launched with a Kickstarter campaign, which fans can visit now where they can sign up to be notified when the campaign launches.
Will You Join Voldemort’s Dark Forces?
Harry Potter: Defenders of Hogwarts is set when Lord Voldemort’s arrival at the castle is imminent. Players can prepare for the ultimate battle between good and evil by honing spell-casting skills and exploring the grounds of Hogwarts, but the hook of the game is that it comes with a major choice. It’s up to the player whether they want to remain loyal Hogwarts students, or if they will join Voldemort’s Dark Forces.
The official description reads, “In Defenders of Hogwarts, the famed school of witchcraft and wizardry has been infiltrated by Death Eaters and Dark Forces. You must make a choice: represent your house and defend your school, or join the Dark Forces to ensure Lord Voldemort’s victory. Choose wisely, for this battle will have the power to determine the fate of Hogwarts…”
Harry Potter Is a Natural Fit for RPGs
The Harry Potter franchise has found big success with RPG players, particularly with Hogwarts Legacy. Though it was costly to develop with a budget of around $150 million, it was nevertheless a financial hit, generating over $1 billion in revenue with more than 40 million copies sold after its launch in 2023. It was also highly praised by critics in addition to becoming one of the best-selling video games, getting nominated for several prestigious video game awards.
Warner Bros. Discovery has since confirmed that a Hogwarts Legacy sequel is in the planning stages, but there is still a lot that is unknown about the follow-up title. It is expected that the new game will connect to HBO’s Harry Potter reboot series, and the games team has been coordinating some of its storytelling elements with how the plot will play out in the new TV show.
As for the new series, it was recently announced that it will be premiering on HBO and HBO Max on Dec. 25, 2026. The show has already been renewed for a second season, which is now in development. The plan is for each season of the Harry Potter series to adapt a different book from the original novels by J.K. Rowling.
