The romance genre is thriving, and Netflix is getting a piece of the action, thanks to Jennifer Lopez. The newly released Office Romance is now a hit, despite mixed reviews.

With The Summer I Turned Pretty becoming one of Prime Video’s biggest titles in 2025, and the subsequent book-to-series adaptation of Off Campus (which also features a sneaky JLo nod), and a new The Devil Wears Prada movie, rom-coms have never been better. In just one day, Office Romance rushed to dominate the charts on Netflix, per FlixPatrol.

The steamy R-rated comedy dethroned the animated movie David, becoming the No. 1 film in a whopping 65 territories across the world, including the U.S.

What Happens in Office Romance?

Jennifer Lopez is the queen of rom-coms, and she finally returned to the genre four years after Prime Video’s Shotgun Wedding. Throughout her career, JLo mixed her love for music with acting, and starred in multiple classic rom-coms, particularly in the early 2000s, like 2001’s The Wedding Planner, 2002’s Maid in Manhattan, 2003’s Gigli, and 2005’s Monster-in-Law.

While Lopez had multiple careers in her rom-coms, she is the feared and fierce boss of a high-profile airline in Office Romance. However, since said airline, AirCruz, was founded by her father, she has to prove she’s more than a nepo baby. That gets tricky as she is dragged into several lawsuits and gets caught up in a secret office romance with the company’s British lawyer.

The raunchy comedy was directed by Ol Parker (Ticket to Paradise, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again), with a script written by Brett Goldstein and Joe Kelly. Aside from Lopez, Office Romance also stars Ted Lasso actor Brett Goldstein as Daniel Blanchflower, the company’s new in-house lawyer.

The cast also features Betty Gilpin as Sydney Bloom, Jackie’s right-hand woman, Tony Hale as George Dudek, the HR director of AirCruz, Bradley Whitford as Peter Vance, AirCruz’s general counsel, Tony Plana as Francisco Alberto, a board member of AirCruz, and reunites Lopez with Edward James Olmos as Captain Jack Cruz, as they previously worked together on 1997’s Selena.

Office Romance Received Mixed Reviews

Although the rom-com shot straight to No. 1 on Netflix globally, it didn’t impress critics and audiences. The office romance trope is not new, as many films became cult classics for using the genre, including 2018’s Set It Up and 2009’s The Proposal. However, Lopez’s new movie didn’t live up to expectations. Office Romance has an unimpressive 50% score from critics out of 34 reviews, which led to a “rotten” score, and a similar 55% approval rating from the audience.

Audience members were divided, as some believed the movie was entertaining with great chemistry between Lopez and Goldstein, while others called it boring and predictable with all the typical clichés and frequent F-bombs.
