Gundam Seed’s Astray Red Frame Officially Returns in New First Look

The Cosmic Era of Mobile Suit Gundam SEED featured several now-iconic mecha, but one of them didn’t even appear in the corresponding anime in the continuity. Now, this fan-favorite mech is getting a new plastic model kit from Bandai.

The MG 1/100 Gundam Liberty Astray Red Frame is a redux of the legendary Red Frame, which debuted in the Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Astray manga. Featuring all the swords and detail that fans would expect, this iteration also has sliding armor that makes every pose even more dynamic. This actually makes it unique among the Master Grade line, making the katana-wielding mobile suit a true cut above.

The Red Frame Gundam Slashes Into Fans’ Collections With a New Master Grade

Bandai’s MG 1/100 Gundam Liberty Astray Red Frame is based on a design from the manga Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ASTRAY, which takes place around the time of the Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom anime movie. The design itself is, of course, a version of the classic Junk Guild mobile suit that debuted in the original Astray manga, which took place concurrently with the events of the main Mobile Suit Gundam SEED anime.

The Liberty Astray Red Frame is designed to maximize articulation and human-like movement, as seen in the Master Grade model kit as well. This is bolstered by a design that’s essentially a stylized take on a mobile suit that already had a fairly samurai-esque appearance.

The articulation is achieved through the fact that this kit has the most interlocking armor panels of any Master Grade yet. When the limbs or other parts are moved, these panels will slide and shift, exposing the mechanical details underneath. Along with a newly designed Beam Rifle and shield, the Liberty Astray Red Frame also comes with the Gerbera Straight and the Tiger Pierce, the unit’s iconic katanas.

These weapons can even be combined into different configurations, with wrist parts that can sheath some accessories. Now available for pre-order on various sites for around $52 USD, the MG 1/100 Gundam Liberty Astray Red Frame is expected to be released sometime in December 2026. The Cosmic Era began in 2002, with Gundam SEED and the Gundam SEED Astray manga premiering within months of each other.
