7 Anime Series That Are a Masterclass in Power Scaling

A high-stakes, creative, yet fleshed-out and well-designed power system is the key to many action anime series’ success. And a quality framework of diverse but comprehensive abilities in a show naturally ignites the desire to compare and analyze characters’ combat prowess and debate which hero would come out on top in a hypothetical battle scenario, a practice given the name power scaling.

Of course, battles and abilities in fiction mostly serve as triggers for narrative development, not as infallible power scaling tools. However, the best power systems in anime manage to incorporate storytelling virtues into intricate, logically sound magical structures that make fantastical abilities feel almost scientifically elaborate and realistic. Such series are, naturally, favored by power scalers the most.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood makes the guiding principle of its power system crystal clear early on: the law of equivalent exchange dictates that obtaining anything must come with a loss of equal value. Alchemists themselves don’t simply fight with abstract magical powers – they must reshape the terrain and manipulate matter with almost scientific precision.

Alchemy follows strict rules that apply to every hero equally, regardless of the type of alchemy they practice. Even characters and phenomena that seemingly break these principles, like the Homunculi or the Philosopher’s Stone, still have logical in-universe explanations and work within the existing framework.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood keeps its power system grounded and sensible throughout the entire show. Any power-up comes with a price, and no one’s strength can just randomly spike or bypass the rules without a logical explanation. As such, combat stays tactical and innovative, with intelligence and environmental awareness often being key to winning a fight.

World Trigger’s Power System Prioritizes Tactics Over Raw Power

A regrettably underrated sci-fi shonen series, World Trigger features a power system perfect in its simplicity and balance. The plot of World Trigger revolves around a defense organization known as Border that protects Earth from alien invaders, Neighbors, using Triggers. Unlike most shonen powers, Triggers are more technical than magical.

Triggers are powered through Trion, a natural energy source humans possess. Trion capacity is inherent, so unreasonable and sudden power-ups are virtually impossible in World Trigger. Moreover, most Border agents use Standard Triggers that are available to all and have understandable, limited capacities, making fights more about ingenuity, tactics, and clever teamwork than raw power clashes.

Despite feeling relatively restrictive, World Trigger’s power system benefits greatly from capping characters’ powers. It allows even naturally weak and disadvantaged characters, like Osamu, whose Trion level is 2, to excel in combat thanks to his wits and tactical equipment customization. World Trigger keeps its fights unpredictable but always logical, and the power scaling in the series is handled skillfully and realistically.

Power Scaling One Piece Can Be Incredibly Fun as Long as It’s Not Taken Too Far

When it comes to power scaling, One Piece takes basically the opposite approach to World Trigger’s pragmatic framework. However, its imaginative ridiculousness hardly makes the power system less competent or fun to speculate about. In One Piece, most powers come from Devil Fruits, which bestow a variety of supernatural abilities, from conventional, like element manipulation or animal transformation, to very unorthodox, like folding people into laundry.

Later on, the series also introduces Haki, a spiritual energy-type power, which some fans criticize for simplifying fights, yet many viewers acknowledge as a way for non-Devil Fruit users to have a fighting chance against stronger opponents. The series certainly has a soft power system that plays fast and loose with its own rules.

Nonetheless, One Piece still has excellent power scaling. The power levels are usually very well-defined, and characters’ abilities are always compelling and unique, which results in countless ingenious matchups. However, some fans do take power scaling in One Piece too seriously, forgetting that the story is, first and foremost, about the adventure, not power levels.

Like One Piece, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure adores unique, often ridiculous abilities one couldn’t find in any other battle shonen. Early on, the series had a rather generic power system, the supernatural martial arts technique called Hamon. In Part 3, however, JJBA totally reinvented the story with the introduction of Stands – manifestations of fighters’ spirits that come with all sorts of innovative abilities.

Early Stands in the series tend to be rather simple. However, in later parts, they get infinitely more creative. No matter how outlandish, each Stand’s powers are very well-defined, and the outcome of battles is usually determined not by who has the strongest Stand but by how well the combatants understand each other’s abilities, utilize their own, and manage to implement clever strategies.

Due to JJBA’s unique structure, it also avoids one of the greatest plights of battle shonen stories – power creep. Each Part features a new set of characters and takes place in a different time period, which allows the power ceiling to basically “reset” and avoids escalating power levels to an absurd degree.

Jujutsu Kaisen’s Exceptional Power System Is One of the Series’ Greatest Strengths

One of the biggest hits in modern shonen anime, Jujutsu Kaisen has amassed such a large, passionate fanbase in no small part thanks to its excellent battles and compelling power system. Both sorcerers and curses in JJK use cursed energy in battle, which comes from negative emotions, yet ends up manifesting in a plethora of mind-blowing abilities.

JJK spends a lot of time outlining the rules of its power system, specifying each Cursed Technique’s principles, and adding extra context and depth to other parts of its power scaling. All sorcerers and curses also have ranks, called Grades in the show; however, that specific aspect of the lore becomes less relevant in later, more escalated fights.

Although JJK’s power scaling is often critiqued for featuring massive gaps in power levels and not always following clear logic, fans also adore its inventiveness and complexity. The best fights in JJK always feature awe-inspiring tactical depth and don’t take absurd shortcuts, even if it doesn’t apply to every clash.

Lord of Mysteries’ World of Beyonders Is Peerlessly Intricate

A donghua hit that adapts an acclaimed dark fantasy novel by the same name, Lord of Mysteries features one of the most elaborate and unique power systems in fiction. In the world of Beyonders, powers are gained by consuming potions of different Pathways, each Pathway separated into ten Sequences.

This framework makes power progression clear from the start: to advance, one must first digest a potion and then seek out the next one, which is both challenging and puts them at risk of losing control. Each advancement comes with a quantifiable change in abilities. The abilities themselves are more conceptual than simply destructive, with each Pathway having unique strengths and weaknesses.

At the same time, Low-Sequence Beyonders are still capable of defeating stronger opponents with ample preparation and the use of items, like Sealed Artifacts and Charms. Klein begins as a Sequence 9 Seer, a support class, yet even early on in the series, manages to take on formidable foes, as even in such a highly structured show, tactical imaginativeness is more important than power levels.

Hunter x Hunter Set the Standard for Battle Shonen Anime

Hunter x Hunter’s Nen is often called anime’s best-designed power system, and it fully deserves to be held in such high regard. In essence, Nen is the ability to control one’s life energy; however, the series makes a point of structuring this simple concept in such an ingenious way that it allows for both infinite creativity and logical, well-defined balance.

Each Nen user is classified into one of six categories, ranging from enhancing one’s natural capabilities to manipulating targets, yet how each individual chooses their ability to materialize is entirely up to them. One can’t just suddenly grow stronger or cheat the system in Hunter x Hunter – a fighter’s strength is determined by skill, resourcefulness, and experience, with the only way to temporarily “power up” being self-imposed conditions that abide by the law of equivalent exchange.

Nen is a brilliantly logical power system that doesn’t break its own rules even in the most dire circumstances. As such, its power scaling is exceptional. Every increase in strength is either painstakingly earned or comes with a price, and even clashes between characters with vastly different power levels can turn into engrossing strategic gambles without a clear winner.
