It’s only a matter of months now until Grand Theft Auto 6 officially releases, and with the November launch date fast-approaching, we’ll know sooner rather than later whether it actually lives up to the hype. There’s likely never been a game as highly discussed, rumored, or speculated on than GTA 6, and the gaming industry writ large will breathe a massive sigh of relief when the wait finally comes to an end.
That said, these next five months are sure to be chock-full of surprises, with a third trailer certain to drop any day now ahead of the game’s official marketing push and the game opening up for pre-orders to give fans a better sense of how much it’s going to cost. Fans are extremely eager to get a glimpse at some actual gameplay footage as well, which is very likely to happen at some point before November 19.
And while there’s unlikely to be a traditional Early Access period, based on previous Rockstar releases, some players are bound to get their hands on GTA 6 before everyone else.
Will There Be Early Access For GTA 6?
In the traditional sense, there will almost certainly not be an Early Access period for GTA 6, largely because this hasn’t been something Rockstar Games typically does historically for any of their major titles. Rockstar’s biggest releases, including GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, launched globally without paid early access windows.
This is largely because the studio prefers highly controlled rollouts to protect story spoilers and online stability, making a playable pre-release period almost guaranteed not to happen. However, that doesn’t mean certain gamers won’t get the game ahead of the rest of us. Looking back at Grand Theft Auto 5‘s launch back in 2013, certain retailers shipped physical copies of the game that arrived in some players’ hands ahead of the official launch date (via PCR).
This was a result of Amazon dispatching copies ahead of an agreed-upon schedule, triggering an official statement from Rockstar to address the situation: “We are in the process of investigating early ‘sales’ to determine how and why that is occurring.” Similar reports surfaced ahead of Red Dead Redemption 2‘s release in 2018, when copies appeared in the wild before the official launch date.
Beware Spoilers Ahead Of GTA 6’s November Release
Early physical copies arriving ahead of launch has become a recurring issue across the gaming industry as a whole, particularly for major releases with extensive retail distribution. Shipping errors, warehouse leaks, and retailers breaking street dates can put games in players’ hands days before release.
Once that happens, gameplay footage, screenshots, and story details often spread rapidly online, making it difficult for publishers to contain spoilers and deliver launch-day surprises for everyone else. While Rockstar will certainly put in place some major guardrails to prevent physical copies from arriving ahead of launch day for GTA 6, they may not be able to completely prevent access.
While online features could remain locked until launch, players who obtain a retail disc ahead of release may still be able to access portions of the single-player game, making accidental early deliveries a big concern for those trying to avoid spoilers. Ultimately, you may want to avoid the internet in general for a few days before Grand Theft Auto 6 drops on November 19 just to play it safe.
