God Of War 6 Official Setting And Mythology Gets Wild Update

With the recent reveal of God of War Laufey, many are wondering what Kratos’ next entry, known only as God of War 6 for the time being, will look like. Naturally, as there is with all upcoming games, there has been rampant speculation surrounding its potential setting, the mythology it’ll cover, and even who will star as its central protagonist. Considering just how much Laufey rocked the proverbial boat by introducing Faye as a playable character, it isn’t hard to imagine how much people’s minds must be spiraling.

Fortunately, we’ve had numerous confirmations from Santa Monica Studio, including that God of War 6 is in the works and that Laufey will serve as more of a spin-off intended to complement the mainline narrative featuring everyone’s favorite gruff dad, Kratos. Most importantly, however, is the confirmation of where God of War 6 may be set, and indeed which mythological figures Kratos will clash with. Depending on how you look at it, this news could be good or maybe a tad overwhelming, as the update is a little wild.

God Of War 6 Just Got Blown Wide Open

We’ve known for quite some time that God of War 6 would feature new mythologies, with many speculating that Kratos would take a trip to Egypt to face off against some of its legendary gods and monsters. However, God of War Laufey has more or less thrown any one specific mythology and setting to the wind with its introduction of the Everywhen. This is a brand-new setting for the series, one that ostensibly serves as the afterlife for all gods and mythological figures from all cultures and religions.

In the extensive gameplay trailer showcased during the impressive June State of Play, we see several key God of War Laufey characters in this new location, including the Tibetan lord of war, Begtse, the Egyptian god of war, Sekhmet, and a sword many believe to be either Excalibur from Arthurian legend, or potentially the sword Kusanagi no Tsurugi from Japanese legend. This is likely only a handful of what Laufey has to offer, especially considering Santa Monica has only showcased a sliver of gameplay from the start of the game.

Additionally, God of War Laufey features a talking cosmic cube and a sentient ribbon as companions for Faye, both of which feel vastly different from what players have seen in previous entries. All of this undeniably expands the possible options for God of War 6 to explore, essentially meaning that the next game in the series could truly go anywhere, or maybe even everywhere.

While this update to God of War 6’s setting and mythology may not be the concrete one some likely hoped for, it does mean that Santa Monica is willing to expand its horizons beyond the two main cultures it has explored thus far. As great as it has been for Kratos to kill all the Greek and Norse gods, it would be interesting to see him tackle the more abstract beings from Eastern mythologies, for example. Laufey all but confirms that this is possible, and that’s vastly more exciting than one singular option.

This is not to say that God of War 6 will explore several mythologies at once, although it wouldn’t be surprising to see Kratos somehow access the Everywhen and encounter the same types of foes as Faye will in Laufey. However, considering Kratos has more or less overcome the issues presented in the first game and is now ready to strike out on his own, it’ll be interesting to see where he heads next and the cultures and religions he’ll encounter.

God of War Laufey also presents an interesting solution to the idea that Kratos is simply done with killing everything and everyone in his way. The idea of the Everywhen allows foes that Kratos has previously felled to return in some form and seek revenge, which will, in turn, force Kratos to pick up his weapons and fight back. At the very least, most dead gods are evil ones, and Kratos certainly has a penchant for vanquishing those. It remains to be seen where God of War 6 is set, but this new update means that the possibilities are endless, and, frankly, that’s exciting.
