Sony Santa Monica Throws Shade at God of War Laufey Critics

God of War Laufey is now official, and Santa Monica Studio has made a subtle dig at critics who say the game should have a different name. The developer is taking a bold leap with the series by putting Kratos’ deceased wife Faye in the spotlight as she fights her way through the afterlife of the gods, and it’s sparked some debate about God of War Laufey‘s title.

At the recent Sony State of Play, God of War Laufey was the big surprise announcement to close out the show. Santa Monica Studio revealed 20 minutes of God of War Laufey gameplay footage, and it was packed with fresh companion characters, a sneak peek at its intense combat, and even new gods from pantheons that the series has never explored before. However, since Faye isn’t a goddess of war, some have claimed the game needs a new title. Santa Monica Studio has already subtly addressed this debate, and it might ultimately put it to rest.

God of War Laufey’s Boss Fights Have Seriously Endless Potential, But It’s Not the New Ones That Are Most Exciting

God of War Laufey is introducing brand-new pantheons, but the afterlife of the gods also leaves room for familiar faces to return.

Why a New Game Doesn’t Need Kratos to Be Titled ‘God of War’

On Santa Monica Studio’s official Twitter page, the developer has made two separate posts about God of War Laufey‘s new gods, Begtse and Sekhmet. The tweets referred to them as a god and goddess of war, respectively. This means that God of War Laufey‘s use of the “God of War” in the name is still accurate. There are many pantheons that have gods of war, so Kratos doesn’t necessarily need to be the only character to represent that title.

Begtse comes from Mongolian mythology, and Sekhmet is an Egyptian goddess who is in control of chaos and sickness in addition to war. There has been hope for a while now that the series would eventually introduce new pantheons, and God of War Laufey‘s cast of characters confirms that is finally happening.

Even though some fans were hoping to play as Kratos in the new God of War game, the 20-minute footage at least confirmed that he will still be present in the story. Faye sees a hallucination of him while she’s trying to free herself from the prison Begtse and Sekhmet put her in, and it’s likely that she will continue to see visions of him throughout her journey. There are already rumors that Begtse and Sekhmet won’t be the only gods of war present. Leaks have suggested that Tyr is in God of War Laufey as a second protagonist, but this should be taken with a grain of salt until confirmed by the developer.

There are a lot of questions about God of War Laufey that have yet to be answered, and it will be interesting to see if more gods of war join Begtse and Sekhmet’s ranks. It’s hard to say when Santa Monica Studio will reveal more details, though. The Game Awards at the end of the year would be a great time to show off a new trailer and announce God of War Laufey‘s release date, but only time will tell.
