Forget FF7 Revelation, Final Fantasy Resonance Is The Perfect RPG For Longtime Fans

Earlier this week, we got two huge bits of news for Final Fantasy fans. Firstly, the third and final entry in the Final Fantasy 7 remake project was officially announced with a reveal trailer during Summer Game Fest. Titled Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, the game will bring the thrilling conclusion of the remake to all consoles simultaneously in spring of 2027.

FF 7 Revelation will finish the retelling of the beloved and iconic 1997 game. The third game sends Cloud and his companions on an epic journey stop an approaching meteor, put an end to Sephiroth’s nefarious schemes, and save their world from the very weapons that are meant to protect it.

Final Fantasy Resonance Is A Remake Fans Shouldn’t Miss

But Revelation isn’t the only Final Fantasy retelling that’s scheduled for release soon. The other exciting news revealed last week was the unexpected Final Fantasy Resonance. While Revelation features a brand-new look at a beloved story, it takes many liberties with the story and play style.

Resonance, on the other hand, is a remake that’s much truer to its original source. If you look at the official website for Final Fantasy Resonance, you might not even realize it’s a remake. The game’s original source isn’t mentioned a single time on the main page, so you might think this charming HD-2D title is a brand-new creation.

In fact, Resonance is a remake of the first season of a game many Final Fantasy fans might have missed: Final Fantasy Brave Exvius. Brave Exvius was a mobile-only, gacha-based Final Fantasy game that was active from 2016 through 2024. The tale followed protagonist Rain and his friends on a classic journey to protect the world’s precious crystals from evil forces.

As the story progressed, the stakes got higher and higher, spanning across space and time. For those who got to experience the game as it was drip-fed to them over eight years, Resonance is a chance to relive the fantastic story in Square Enix’s now-iconic HD-2D remake style. Those who never got to play it, though, can now finally play a hidden gem painstakingly recreated for console gaming.

The game’s producer, Keisuke Nakashima, sums it up best in an extensive interview with Automaton Media: “I thought it would be a shame for such a wonderful game to become unplayable via mobile, and that’s one of the reasons I decided to create Final Fantasy Resonance for consoles.

Return To The Franchise’s Roots With Final Fantasy Resonance

20-6

As you may infer from the crystal-oriented main story, Final Fantasy Resonance is a true return to the series’ origins. The game takes a step back from the exciting and fast-pased pacing of current-gen Final Fantasy games. Instead, it features turn-based combat and a more thoughtful approach to strategy and fighting. It will also allow players to call in some familiar faces from other Final Fantasy titles to help out in battle.

According to Nakashima, this is the game that he hopes will make fans go: “This is the Final Fantasy we’ve been waiting for.” With Resonance, he hoped to create a new game that feels like the classic experience from the franchise’s beginnings. “I personally wanted to be able to play a new Final Fantasy game,” he stated, “which starts by having to sit down and think deeply about how you’re going to build your party.”

“This is the Final Fantasy we’ve been waiting for.”

The title is, as Nakashima puts it, what he imagines “the Final Fantasy series would look like now if it kept evolving while maintaining pixel-art graphics.

The only downside to Final Fantasy Resonance is that it’s incomplete. Brave Exvius spanned across four seasons, each one focusing on a different character and self-contained story. Each, as I mentioned before, is more epic and exciting than the last. Final Fantasy Resonance will only retell the mobile game’s first season.

Whether the rest of the seasons will also get an HD-2D remake may depend on how successful this first game is—which is why I hope the title won’t get overshadowed by the more well-known Final Fantasy 7 Revelation. Final Fantasy Resonance is scheduled for release on October 22, 2026, for all modern consoles. As Nakashima says: “Please look forward to its release!
