Final Fantasy Officially Returns in New Game Coming This Year

While the final entry in the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy won’t arrive until 2027, another Final Fantasy game is coming this year. Final Fantasy: The Board Game, an officially licensed game inspired by Final Fantasy IIII is being published by KessCo and is currently slated to release this Fall.

The upcoming board game is heavily inspired by the Pixel Remaster games, but also features classic artwork from Yoshitaka Amano, along with a box inspired by the NES. This game will be part of an entire lineup of Final Fantasy tabletop games, so fans of later entries in the series have plenty to look forward to.

Created by Anthony Thorp, Final Fantasy: The Board Game is set to offer players a co-op experience inspired by the worlds and characters of the first three entries in the mainline Final Fantasy video game franchise. Final Fantasy: The Board Game is designed to be played by one to four players and is designed to play like a traditional JRPG.

KessCo will also be producing numerous sets of collectible RPG dice inspired by the first six mainline Final Fantasy video games, several of which will be made available alongside Final Fantasy: The Board Game. Each dice set will be released with a sculpted character model crafted in celebration of the pixelated era of Final Fantasy.

CEO Alex Kessler said of the announcement, “We’ve seen how powerful Final Fantasy can be in the tabletop space recently, bringing longtime fans and brand-new players into a shared experience. We’re excited to partner with Square Enix and continue that momentum with our own faithful adaptation that honors what fans love most about the Pixel Remaster Era while delivering something fun, accessible, and collectible for the tabletop community.”

By far one of the biggest video game franchises of all time, Final Fantasy has crossed over from the realm of video games to tabletops on numerous occasions before, and is sure to continue doing so in years to come. Back in 2025, fans got the chance to celebrate their favorite franchise in a whole new way courtesy of the Universes Beyond: Final Fantasy set released for Magic: The Gathering.

Universes Beyond: Final Fantasy proved to be one of the most successful Magic: The Gathering sets in the game’s history, raking in more than $200 million in sales after only 24 hours of release. The set was also widely lauded by fans of both franchises, and set what has come to be regarded as something of a dangerous precedent for the future of Magic: The Gathering‘s Universes Beyond line.

While Final Fantasy XVII has yet to be announced, fans recently got a major update on Final Fantasy VII: Revelation, which showed its first trailer at Summer Game Fest. Naoki Hamaguchi, the game’s director, recently teased the game’s ending in a CBR interview, saying “[Everything] is going to tie into this huge revelation that’s going to be shown in the third and final conclusion.”

Final Fantasy: The Board Game and the Final Fantasy collectible dice sets from KessCo are slated to arrive in stores this Fall.
