Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is closing out the remake trilogy, and the trailers show the story playing out in much the same way as the original Final Fantasy 7. However, the director has confirmed that one beloved character is getting more screen time in the finale, which comes with having a larger role in the story.
The ending of Final Fantasy 7 has been elaborated on and expanded in other works since the game’s release, mainly in Dirge of Cerberus, Advent Children and the two Final Fantasy 7 novels, On the Way to a Smile and The Kids are Alright: A Turks Side Story. These installments show how the world survived after the climactic encounter with Sephiroth, and gave new attention to the longtime minor fan-favorite, Reno.
Reno Is Getting More Screen Time In Final Fantasy 7 Revelation
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation has the chance to include numerous elements from the Compilation of Final Fantasy 7, and expand the story beyond what was seen in the original game. In an interview with Famitsu, Naoki Hamaguchi revealed that one character is getting expanded in the last game, and that’s Reno of the Turks.
In the original Final Fantasy 7, the Turks are the shadowy hit squad that works for the Shinra Corporation, doing dirty work behind the scenes, such as spying, intimidation, and even assassination. Reno is the red-haired, flamboyant member of the Turks who acts as a thorn in the player’s side throughout the game.
The Turks did some awful things in Final Fantasy 7, but that’s never stopped a fanbase from latching onto a character before. The popularity of the Turks led to Reno and his pal, Rude, being turned into goofball comic relief characters in Advent Children, becoming main characters in the Japan-exclusive Before Crisis, and getting expanded roles in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy, where Reno is shown to be more conflicted about his evil deeds.
Reno and the Turks still have their usual role to play in the remainder of the story, but there’s plenty of room for expansion, especially as the party is shown traveling the world and fighting the Weapons in the Final Fantasy 7 Revelation trailer. It’s possible the Turks will become recurring villains, before eventually having their face turn and working to stop Sephiroth.
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation Could Finally Add The Before Crisis Crew
There is one piece of canonical lore that could be shown in Final Fantasy 7 Revelation to help elevate Reno’s character. One of the Final Fantasy 7 prequel games is Before Crisis, a Japan-exclusive mobile title that stars the Turks, and shows events that take place before and after the original story.
At the end of Before Crisis, Reno and the Turks help evacuate Midgar with the other playable characters. This scene could be the expansion that Hamaguchi spoke of, giving the Turks a greater role in the return to where everything began. The other possibility is that a Before Crisis monster could finally become canon in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake timeline. In Before Crisis, the first of the Weapon monsters was unleashed on the world in an effort to stop the Turks. This was called the Jade Weapon, and it was the game’s secret boss.
The trailer for Final Fantasy 7 Revelation showed the prototype Weapons from Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth attacking a town. It’s possible the classic Weapons (Diamond, Sapphire, Emerald, Ruby, and Ultima) are born from them. If the Turks’ storyline involves the arrival of Jade Weapon as a new boss, Reno could finally get his big moment in the limelight.
