Fable Features 1000 Romanceable and “Handcrafted” NPCs

Adding to its already impressive-looking scale, it appears that Playground Games’ upcoming Fable has over 1,000 “handcrafted” NPCs, and apparently, all of them are romanceable according to a new interview. Fable has been on a spree of new reveals and first-looks following a massive Summer Game Fest season.

The Fable franchise has always been widely celebrated for its extensive player freedom and second-life-style mechanics, often considered a pioneer of modern Western RPGs alongside titles like The Elder Scrolls. While Peter Molyneux made a lot of promises about the original Fable trilogy that didn’t materialize, one big thing that the franchise did popularize was real estate mechanics and sweeping freedom to talk to and romance just about every NPC in the game, which is a feat not many RPGs can say they accomplish even today. As the new Fable reboot approaches, it appears that Playground Games is continuing in the spirit of the original games.

Why the New Fable Game Can’t Let Go of Its Weirdest Side Quests

As the Fable reboot’s launch date approaches, Playground Studios would do well by fans by taking a look at the franchise’s weirdest side quests.

Players Can Romance over 1,000 Unique NPCs in Fable with Independent Personalities and Goals

In a recent GameSpot interview, game director Craig Littler stated that Fable is going to feature over 1,000 handcrafted NPCs, and every single one of them will be a romance option for the Hero of Briar Hill. However, there is a catch to Fable‘s romance, and it appears that players won’t be able to romance everyone all at the same time. Due to the complexity of Fable‘s morality system, some characters may want the main character to act morally evil, essentially shutting down potential romance options who are morally good. Additionally, Fable uses a monogamous romance system, meaning players can marry only one person at a time.

“There are over 1,000 handcrafted NPCs in the game, and you can get into a relationship with any of them–or all of them–indeed, if that’s what you want to do. Might take you quite a while, but you could definitely do that.”

Later in the interview, associate game director William Kennedy stated that, as seen in the Fable gameplay demo, the player’s chosen romance can craft distinct stories based on their personality type. For example, during the demo, the Hero was in a relationship with a character named Megan, who had high expectations and specific goals for the Hero, including owning a home and dressing in fancy clothes. Of the 1,000 NPCs, apparently, all of them have their own goals and aspirations for the Hero leading to an abundance of possibilities for relationship dynamics in the upcoming reboot.

“All 1,000 of them are handcrafted by our team…She wanted me to own my own home, and what the design team was doing with that handcrafting was making sure that each NPC was a cohesive character, that you could end up having different stories when you interact with them.”

Fable‘s plethora of romance options certainly evokes the sense of wonderment and escapism that classic Fable games reveled in. The original trilogy was always big on player freedom, and part of that freedom was allowing the main character to romance whoever they wanted, starting with Fable 2. The franchise has always prided itself on being a sort of second life that fans can partake in rather than a bog-standard open-world RPG, and it seems the upcoming reboot is doing right by the original’s identity in that regard.

Summer Game Fest 2026 was a huge one for Fable, delivering a new trailer, a release date, pre-order bonuses, and a look at the return of one of the original villains. Unfortunately, Fable has been delayed to 2027, but that doesn’t mean that this year will be lacking in content and new looks at the game as it approaches launch. Following the recent 30-minute gameplay demo, the Fable devs have stated that there will be plenty more to come and deep dives into the upcoming reboot very soon.
