Disney Is Officially Releasing The Perfect Home Alone Replacement With First Look Revealed

Disney is working on a new Christmas special that serves as the perfect holiday replacement for Home Alone, and a first-look photo has now been revealed.

Released in 1990, Home Alone stars Macaulay Culkin as an 8-year-old kid named Kevin whose parents accidentally leave their son at home when they leave for their trip to Paris. The success of the film has led to multiple sequels as well as various parodies over the years.

This holiday season, Disney+ and Disney Jr. will air Mickey’s Home Alone, which is inspired by Home Alone, according to Deadline. In the special, Minnie Mouse invites Mickey Mouse and their friends to the Ice Palace for the holidays. The morning of their departure, as everyone is rushing to get ready, Minnie leaves without Mickey and Pluto.

Separated from their friends, Mickey and Pluto come face to face with a raccoon and weasel, who threaten to make the situation even worse by attempting to steal their Christmas dinner. With all of this going on, Minnie and her friends attempt to get back home and reunite with Mickey and Pluto.

Keith Harrison Dworkin wrote two brand-new songs, “Ho-Ho-Home for Christmas” and “Favorite Christmas Feeling,” that will be included in Mickey’s Home Alone. Award-winning composer Tony Morales has also worked on a new arrangement of “Jingle Bells” for the special. Executive producers include Tom Rogers and Rachel Ruderman, while Shane Prigmore has signed on as director.

Along with this announcement, Disney also shared a first-look photo of Mickey’s Home Alone, which features Mickey and Pluto decorating their home for the holidays with wreaths, garland, lights and ornaments.

While a premiere date hasn’t been announced yet, Disney is clearly taking major inspiration from the 1990 film. Aside from Culkin, the Chris Columbus-directed Home Alone also starred John Heard, Catherine O’Hara, Joe Pesci, Daniel Stern, Roberts Blossom, Angela Goethals, Devin Ratray, Hillary Wolf, Michael C. Maronna, Gerry Bamman, and John Candy.

After appearing in a handful of films up to that point, including Uncle Buck, Home Alone served as the now-45-year-old actor’s breakout role. In the years since then, Culkin has gone on to movies like The Pagemaster, Richie Rich, and Zootopia 2, and the TV shows Robot Chicken, The Jim Gaffigan Show, American Horror Story, The Righteous Gemstones, and Fallout.

After Home Alone grossed $477.3 million at the box office, Culkin and several other cast members returned for the 1992 sequel, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, as did Columbus as director. The Home Alone franchise continued after that, sans Culkin, with Home Alone 3, Home Alone 4, Home Alone: The Holiday Heist, and Home Sweet Home Alone.

As of 2019, Disney owns the rights to Home Alone after acquiring 20th Century Fox. The film remains a holiday classic to this day, so much so that Disney is leaning into the beloved franchise for its next Mickey Mouse special.
