Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Officially Gets New Ending That’ll Break Your Heart

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners just got an official new ending that, in spite of the existence of an ending for the anime on Netflix, is sure to break your heart all over again. The anime released in 2022 helped expand the world of Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt RED’s videogame that is, in turn, inspired by the Cyberpunk 2020 TTRPG. Following the release of the anime, elements of it were incorporated into the videogame, and players can find David’s jacket in Cyberpunk 2077, for example, as well as Rebecca’s shotgun.

This article contains spoilers for both the official Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime and the story in the new collab with an RPG.

The anime’s story continues to linger in the minds of fans, especially to the sound of Rosa Walton’s I Really Want to Stay at Your House. Even though the first season of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners came to a definitive conclusion, there is still more in store for its story, as was reported by ComicBook. According to the outlet, the anime got something of a new official ending, thanks to a previously announced, yet unexpected collaboration.

As seen in the report, the Wuthering Waves collaboration with Cyberpunk: Edgerunners has gone live, and it introduces a new story arc centered around some of the main characters in the anime, as they collaborate with Rover, the RPG’s protagonist. In the anime, Rebecca is crushed by Adam Smasher as she tries to protect the last remaining members of her crew, and after that, David is killed by Arasaka’s top-tier mercenary, as he sacrifices himself so that Lucy can escape alive.

This ultimately leads to one of the most emotional scenes in one of the best sci-fi anime of all time: Lucy fulfills her dream of visiting the Moon, though she is alone, and has visions of David joyfully accompanying her, only to remember he is no longer alive. This is a gut-wrenching ending to a tragic tale. However, the recent collab with Wuthering Waves has led to an alternative ending that is equally sad and heartwarming.

As seen in the report, after defeating the threats imposed by Arasaka and beating Adam Smasher (which can be done with Rebecca from Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, giving players a taste of what would be a better ending for her) in Wuthering Waves, Lucy, Rebecca, and Rover head to the Moon, where they see David. Rebecca rushes the character, hugging him, and then pushing him towards Lucy. David runs over to Lucy, and she throws himself in his arms.

Even though this alternative ending for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is only canon in Wuthering Waves, it is one that fans of the anime are sure to appreciate. Lucy and David’s reunion is what every spectator could have hoped for – and the fact that it didn’t happen in the anime is exactly what made it so good. This new ending for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners also shreds your heart to pieces, mostly because you know this isn’t what happened – but it’s still worth playing to spend more time with these amazing characters.
