Since its launch back in 2020, Cyberpunk 2077 has become something of a cultural phenomenon when it comes to its impact on other forms of media. Not only has the game welcomed multiple crossovers with Fortnite, but it has also gone on to welcome graphic novel series, arcade games, and even collaborations with companies you would never expect.
However, it is perhaps the Netflix animated show, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, which is the biggest success story when it comes to Cyberpunk 2077 spin-offs. First airing back in 2022 and taking place in the same setting of Night City, Cyberpunk Edgerunners follows the story of street kid, David, who finds himself trying to survive in a city obsessed with body modification and technology. As such, he finds himself joining a group known as Edgerunners, cybernetically-enhanced mercenaries also known as cyberpunks.
Spoilers for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners ahead. It is here that he meets Lucy, a mysterious netrunner who introduces David to the criminal underbelly of Night City. With a deep-seated hatred for Arasaka, her dream is to travel to the moon, and when she and David eventually fall in love, she hopes that he will go with her. However, when David is killed at the hands of Adam Smasher, Lucy soon realizes that her dream will never come true, and although she does eventually travel to the moon, she does so alone.
With viewers left heartbroken, and fans such as myself way too emotional over the pair’s ending, a recent unofficial sequel has been welcomed.
It was just last week that Cyberpunk 2077 teamed up with hit gacha title, Wuthering Waves to bring us the collaboration event we have all been waiting for. Allowing players to play as both Lucy and Rebecca from Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, fans of the animated show were also over the moon (ha ha) to see the return of David as the trio finally reunite on the moon.
As you can imagine, this was a very emotional moment, and it was not long before Lucy ran into David’s arms in the place they were always meant to go together. Add in ‘I Really Wanna Stay At Your House’ playing in the background, and I was an emotional mess once more.
Over on Reddit, one fan shared a clip of the moment in question, and fans took to the comments to share their thoughts on the unofficial sequel we have all been waiting for.
“Bro, why do you make us drink the soul-hurting juice?” One user asked. Another agreed, adding, “This hit me in the feels. They finally went to the moon together. Beautiful song too.”
“I usually don’t like WuWa’s story as a casual player, but this was genuinely solid,” another positive response read. “Explores Lucy’s trauma and how she moves on. Brought back the original VAs, writers, and everything to get it done. No dumb self inserts, no gacha bulls*it. Super authentic, and a genuine good time.”
With Wuthering Waves being free to play, you too could dive into the hit gacha game and explore the world of Cyberpunk 2077 and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners as you have never seen before. However, you had better be prepared for some strong emotions.
