Three years after struggling at the box office, Chris Pine’s fantasy adventure Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves has officially found streaming redemption on Pluto TV. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is officially the most-streamed movie on the free streaming platform just one day after landing on the platform.
This is one more example of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves finally getting its due. The fantasy flick struggled at the box office despite being a crowd-pleaser, but now has finally found its audience on streaming.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves Finally Gets Its Due
In Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, a charming thief and a band of unlikely adventurers undertake an epic heist to retrieve a lost relic, but things go dangerously awry when they run afoul of the wrong people. Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley directed the movie from a screenplay they co-wrote with Michael Gilio, inspired by Dungeons & Dragons and set in the Forgotten Realms fantasy setting. The movie’s cast includes Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, and Hugh Grant.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves scored well with fans and critics. The movie’s Rotten Tomatoes critics’ score is an impressive “Certified Fresh” at 91% positive, and a consensus calling it “An infectiously good-spirited comedy with a solid emotional core.” Fans on th site rank the D&D adaptation as “Certified Hot” with a 92% positive user score, saying it “entertainingly blends action, fantasy, and comedy — all while respecting the source material.”
CBR reviewed Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves favorably, drawing glowing comparisons to some other popular fantasy projects: “That’s ultimately the big takeaway from Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. In an age where fantasy has to typically be subversive (like House of the Dragon) or grandiose (like The Rings of Power), this film is the perfect light swing. Self-aware without being meta, sincere without being overly sweet, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves finds the sweet spot for fantasy adventure that audiences of all ages can dive into. While it might not revolutionize the fantasy genre, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is a very solid movie.”
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves Couldn’t Find Its Box Office Audience
Despite its strong reputation, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves did not perform well at the box office. It made $208.2 million on a $150 million production budget.
There has been plenty of speculation and discussion among fans about the latest D&D movie’s failure to launch. Some blamed it on weak marketing for the tabletop adaptation, while others wondered whether The Super Mario Bros. Movie‘s surprising level of success buried Honor Among Thieves. There was also some fan backlash against D&D owners Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro, which caused tension in the fan community at the time. Some had chosen to boycott the companies, which may have hurt the movie even though it wasn’t the direct target.
Whoever is to blame, Paramount doesn’t seem to think it was the D&D movie’s directors. Goldstein and Daily are now working on Paramount’s next Star Trek movie.
In the years since Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves opened, the franchise has pivoted away from theaters and more toward streaming with its in-development adaptations. Currently, a Forgotten Realms series is set for Netflix, and a sequel to the hit video game Baldur’s Gate III is in the works at HBO.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is now streaming for free on Pluto TV.
