3 Best Movies To Watch On Netflix This Weekend (June 6-7)

Netflix‘s best movies to watch in the first weekend of June should prove themselves exciting a wide array of viewers, as the streamer has seen the arrival of several movies of the most varied genres. On last weekend’s Netflix movie recommendations, I went over the new Netflix Original movie Ladies First, the box office hit Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and Tom Hardy’s Havoc.

At the time of writing, none of those three movies is trending on Netflix in the United States. However, according to FlixPatrol, Ladies First still ranks as the most-watched movie on Netflix worldwide, even without charting in the United States. For the first weekend of June, I tried to repeat last weekend’s selection in a way, once again opting for different genres.

So no, this list of recommendations would probably not be suited for a three-movie binge, though each entry is strong individually. The three movies unite some of the biggest actors in Hollywood these days. Among the casts of the films are stars like Chris Pratt, Emily Blunt, Michael B. Jordan, Jennifer Lawrence, Tessa Thompson, Rebecca Ferguson, and many more.

There are no Netflix Original movies on this weekend’s list. At the start of every month, Netflix and other streaming services receive a huge influx of licensed films. This time around, the list of new arrivals was simply too strong to look away from, with a psychological thriller, a sports drama, and a sci-fi epic for Netflix subscribers to get lost in.

The Girl On The Train (2016)

The Devil Wears Prada 2 has become a major box office hit, as expected, and with the film still in theaters, I thought that this Emily Blunt psychological thriller that arrived on Netflix on June 1 would be a great alternative. The Girl on the Train boasts an all-star cast, with actors like Luke Evans, Rebecca Ferguson, Justin Theroux, Allison Janney, Lisa Kudrow, and more.

The film is based on the book of the same name by Paula Hawkins, which I found hard to put down once I turned the first few pages. The Girl on the Train tells the story of Blunt’s Rachel, an unreliable narrator due to her alcohol dependency and blackouts who makes a habit out of watching a couple’s life from the window of her train. Suddenly, she becomes the suspect of a dark investigation.

Creed (2015)

Following Blunt’s psychological thriller is Creed, the first movie in the modern chapter of the iconic Rocky franchise. The sports drama stars Michael B. Jordan as Adonis Creed, who is the son of Carl Weathers’ Apollo Creed. The movie also arrived on Netflix on June 1 alongside the rest of the Creed trilogy and multiple Rocky releases.

Creed is trending on Netflix in the United States at 8th.

Creed focuses on Sylvester Stallone’s return as Rocky Balboa, as he trains the son of his former rival. Creed is an impactful sports drama with a tale of striving to be the best and live up to one’s legacy. The film is directed by Ryan Coogler, who recently helmed the vampire hit Sinners, also starring Jordan and which led to the actor winning his first Best Actor Oscar.

Passengers (2016)

Finally, the best movie to watch on Netflix this weekend is 2016’s Passengers, which also arrived on June 1. The sci-fi movie focuses on quite the duo of stars, with Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence playing two characters who were woken up from suspended animation several years before their spaceship was meant to land on a new planet. Everyone else is still sleeping as Pratt’s Jim and Lawrence’s Aurora start a life on the ship.

The sci-fi movie’s biggest controversy is that Jim single-handedly decided to wake up Aurora so he would not be alone, which generates turmoil. Passengers has gorgeous space visuals, a high-stakes storyline, advanced technology, and two fan-favorite actors firing on all cylinders. It is the perfect movie to end this star-studded weekend on Netflix.
