Batman: The Animated Series Officially Returns With New Release This Year

Fans of Batman: The Animated Series will soon be able to tell new stories in its world, as Enemies of Gotham City is launching in 2026, and it lets the Dark Knight’s greatest villains run through Gotham on the biggest crime spree of all time.

While Batman has been interpreted and portrayed in many different ways over the years, there are many who will always think of the version of the character they grew up with as the definitive one. For many Batman fans, the true version of the Dark Knight will always be Kevin Conroy’s portrayal of the character in Batman: The Animated Series and Justice League, as well as his return to role in the incredible Arkham video game series.

The classic ’90s version of Batman is returning in 2026, only this time around, he’s not the main character. Upper Deck is releasing Enemies of Gotham City this year. In Enemies of Gotham City, players take on the role of characters like Joker, Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, M. Freeze, and Two-Face, as they go on a massive crime spree, all while avoiding Batman and his allies.

Enemies of Gotham City comes with a massive map of Gotham, minis for each playable character and members of the Bat Family, and 165 cards. Each of the villains has their own game board, which explains their powers, as the cards move Batman ever closer to them. All the artwork on the cards either directly comes from or is based on Batman: The Animated Series, making it the ideal gift for fans of the show.

The main goal of Enemies of Gotham City is to control districts, which provide resources that the player can use to bring more Goons onto their team, and earn enough Infamy to win the game. While Batman has the moves and the gadgets, the villains can also use equipment of their own to even the score, or at least secure an easy escape if needed.

Enemies of Gotham City can be made even more exciting, as Upper Deck is also releasing the Knight on the Town expansion, which adds four new playable characters, making the Riddler, Killer Croc, Man-Bat, and the Phantasm options for the Gotham crime spree. Man-Bat and the Phantasm come with special rules, as they’re classed as Lone Villains, who don’t necessarily play well with others. Knight on the Town also adds Officer Montoya and Detective Bullock to the hero side, making it harder for villains to avoid the law.

There have been many tremendous DC Comics board games, tabletop RPGs, and video games released over the years, but these have usually starred the heroes. Enemies of Gotham City lets players walk on the dark side, and portrays some of fiction’s greatest villains on the game board.
