Colonial Marines will be battling Xenomorphs in the claustrophobic halls of abandoned space stations once more, as Operation Leading Edge has been announced for Alien: The Roleplaying Game Evolved Edition, pitting players against the deadly killing machines that reside in the darkest reaches of space.
The Alien franchise was vital in the development of video games, with countless titles seeking to emulate Aliens, where a small group of trained soldiers is trapped in a facility overrun with an endless swarm of monsters. Alien is a popular inspiration for video games, but it never had much of a presence in the tabletop RPG space, at least until 2019, when Free League Publishing released Alien: The Roleplaying Game, which captured the horror and deadliness of being trapped with a Xenomorph.
Aliens: Operation Leading Edge Launches Q4 2026
A new epic adventure is about to be told in the Alien universe, as Free League has announced Operation Leading Edge for both Alien: The Roleplaying Game Evolved Edition and the game’s original edition. This is a new Cinematic Adventure that’s available for pre-order on the Free League website, with an expected release window of Q4 2026.
Operation Leading Edge is the second part of the Jeremiah Trilogy campaign (with the first being Rapture Protocol), but it can be played as a standalone adventure for 3–5 players. In Operation Leading Edge, players take on the role of Colonial Marines sent to the planet Jeremiah VI to secure a mineral deposit. Presumably, when they get there, nothing bad happens, and absolutely no aliens eat their face.
Operation Leading Edge Has The Amazing Physical Items Free League Is Known For
Free League RPGs are well known for the high-quality physical handouts that come with their campaigns, such as the crime scene photos, newspapers, and maps with the Blade Runner Roleplaying Game expansions. Operation Leading Edge is no exception, as it comes with two gorgeous double-sided maps, five pre-generated character sheets with Personal Agenda cards, cardboard tokens, and GM maps and handouts.
For those unfamiliar with Free League’s Alien RPGs, the Personal Agenda cards are used to reward and guide players. See, in Alien, players may have secret missions or goals to complete, which might mean betraying other party members. Maybe they’re secretly working for Weyland-Yutani and want to ensure a Face Hugger is brought safely to Earth, or maybe they’re an Android who has to sabotage the mission for a rival company. It’s an aspect of the game that players always need to be aware of.
The hidden plots among the players add to the unsettling atmosphere of Alien: The Roleplaying Game, and make it a great follow-up to the co-operation of Dungeons & Dragons. Even the Colonial Marines won’t last long against a Xenomorph, so there’s a fine balance between sticking together and knowing when to cut people loose, which is a feeling that will likely be present in Operation Leading Edge.
