Aaron Sorkin’s Social Network Follow-Up Brings Mark Zuckerberg Back With a Twist

The trailer for The Social Reckoning has officially arrived. It’s even following in The Social Network‘s footsteps with another pitch-perfect cast in the lead.

The official trailer for The Social Reckoning was released by Sony Pictures Entertainment on June 10, giving fans their first look at the upcoming The Social Network companion piece. The film will chart the uncovering and eventual aftermath of The Facebook Files, with Jeremy Strong taking on Jesse Eisenberg’s old role as Mark Zuckerberg.

Why The Social Reckoning Has Audiences So Excited

Announced back in 2025, The Social Reckoning comes more than 15 years after the release of The Social Network, which explored the rise of Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg’s legal battle with Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, both portrayed by Armie Hammer, and Eduardo Saverin, portrayed by Andrew Garfield. The original film also featured appearances from Justin Timberlake, Max Minghella, Brenda Song, Rashida Jones, David Selby, John Getz, Dakota Johnson, and over a dozen other fan-favorites.

Directed by David Fincher from a screenplay by Sorkin, which itself was based on Ben Mezrich’s The Accidental Billionaires from 2009, The Social Network was a massive hit upon its release in 2010. Apart from raking in more than $224 million at the box office, The Social Network was lauded by critics, ultimately winning more than 90 major industry awards following its theatrical run.

In the years since, fans have been eagerly awaiting a potential follow-up to The Social Network. Over the past year, details regarding The Social Reckoning have slowly rolled out, with one of the most surprising being the fact that Jessie Eisenberg won’t be returning to reprise the role of Mark Zuckerberg, although Jeremy Strong’s portrayal of the tech billionaire has already drawn heaps of praise well ahead of the film’s release.

The official logline for The Social Reckoning describes the upcoming film as “A companion piece to the hit film The Social Network, Sorkin’s original screenplay is based on the events that gave rise to the Wall Street Journal’s shocking exposé The Facebook Files. The film is inspired by the true story of how Frances Haugen (Madison), a young Facebook engineer, enlists the help of Jeff Horwitz (White), a Wall Street Journal reporter, to go on a dangerous journey that ends up blowing the whistle on the social network’s most guarded secrets.”

The Facebook Files were the subject of a 2021 Facebook leak, in which internal documents were released to the press by whistleblower Frances Haugen, bringing light to some truly disturbing trends within the company. The Facebook Files confirmed that internally commissioned studies had proven the abject harm that social media platforms such as Instagram do to children and teenagers, as well as the devastating impact of platforms like Facebook had in developing countries.

Ultimately, Haugen went before the U.S. Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Consumer Protection, Product Safety, and Data Security, taking Facebook to task and explaining the numerous inherent issues that were revealed in The Facebook Files. Unfortunately, the fallout was far from what Haugen and others had hoped for, with Facebook rebranding to Meta before its executives embarked upon a series of press tours in an attempt to mitigate the impact of the leak.

The Social Reckoning is currently slated to arrive in theaters on Oct. 9.
