Star Wars is a series whose name alone should promise some amazing space battles, and each film delivered in some way, shape, or form. From 1977 to now, each space battle marked a massive leap in effects and is hard not to watch time and again.
But with so many films, finding the best space battles is a tough one. There are sacrifices, feats, and more that make a great space battle, and the ones that stand out do so because they manage to convey a range of emotions and end in a way that feels perfect for the story being told.
The Battle of Yavin Marked a New Era in Sci-Fi

Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, or just Star Wars in 1977, was a visual and a narrative treat unlike anything seen before, and that was only part of what made it special. What helped was seeing a final battle in space, the like of which had never been explored before in the genre. The Rebels, with their low numbers, trying to stave off Yavin’s destruction by taking the fight to the Death Star was only part of the reason why it was so great.

Idealistic, determined, and driven by love and justice. You believe in people even when they don’t believe in themselves, and you’d sacrifice everything for what’s right. You lead with your heart, trust your instincts, and refuse to give up on anyone — including your enemies.
Independent, charming, and fiercely loyal beneath a tough exterior. You live on your own terms and show up when it matters most, even if you’d never admit you care. You don’t follow rules — you make calculated bets on your own judgment, and you have an uncanny knack for finding a way through.
A natural leader with iron resolve. Strategic, outspoken, and utterly unintimidated by power — you fight not for glory but for lasting justice. You carry responsibility with grace, but there is iron beneath it. You inspire others not through speeches alone, but through the example of your own unwavering resolve.
Disciplined, intense, and deeply complex. You believe in order and commit absolutely to your path. You have high standards — for yourself first, then others — and little patience for weakness. Beneath the formidable exterior burns something deeply human: old loyalties, buried wounds, a past that still shapes every decision.
Wise, patient, and perceptive. You lead with stillness and insight, seeing clearly where others panic. You are the voice of reason in a chaotic room — you don’t need to be the loudest because when you speak, people listen. Your greatest power is not what you can do alone, but what you awaken in others.
The trench run, Luke using the Force, Han’s return to save Luke at the last minute all added to the tension of the moment and worked perfectly. But once Luke dropped the proton torpedoes and escaped, the big explosion that followed was a massive exhale and the start of a new age in sci-fi.
The Battle of Coruscant Reels Viewers in From the Start
The Battle over Coruscant from Star Wars: Episode 3 Revenge of the SithProperty of Lucasfilm and Disney
Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith is often remembered for its epic final battle between Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi, but one thing that can’t be overlooked is the opening battle over Coruscant. Near the end of the Clone Wars, Anakin and Obi-Wan fly in tandem in their Jedi Starfighters throughout a massive battle on their way to rescue the Chancellor from General Grievous.
With John Williams’ score and the banter between the two Jedi fueling the moment, it’s a short fight, but one of the most memorable because it marked a massive leap between this film and the last one. It’s a great battle and easily the best of the prequel trilogy.
The Battle of Scarif Features a Tragic Sacrifice

The Battle of Scarif may be one of the most important space battles and general battles in all of Star Wars. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story featured a band of heroes trying to get the plans to destroy the Death Star to the Rebels, and those who could fight did so from land, air, and space.
Old Republic-class ships ram into Imperial ships and X-Wings, along with Star Wars Rebels‘ Phoenix Squadron, all do what they can to keep the Empire at bay. Rogue One may have lost their lives, but their sacrifice wasn’t for nothing, as it couldn’t have been done without such a hard-fought battle.
The Battle of Exegol Delivered on Scope For a Massive Finale

Star Wars: Episode IX — The Rise of Skywalker ended The Skywalker Saga with a bang as Rey and the other Resistance heroes discover the Emperor’s secret fleet, the Final Order, on the planet Exegol. As these warships with planet-destroying canon mounted on the belly begin to move out, the entire galaxy joins for an epic aerial battle that still hasn’t been topped in terms of scope.
The Rise of Skywalker may be a divisive film for a multitude of reasons, but the final battle was nothing short of impressive as the galaxy banded together to take on an organized force like the Final Order. Seeing old and new faces give it their all as the Star Wars theme played was a blast and will surely never be forgotten.
The Battle of Endor Ended a Long-Running War and the Empire

Star Wars: Episode VI — Return of the Jedi was the grand finale of the original trilogy and had to go out with a bang. With a second armed Death Star ready to be used, the Rebel Alliance took the fight to the battle station while Han and Leia fought on the ground. Meanwhile, Luke faced his father and the Emperor on the Death Star to cap off such an epic finale.
The space battle of Return of the Jedi can’t be beat because of how well it balances every moving part. A-Wings, Y-Wings, and X-Wings all take on the Empire’s fleet and use Star Destroyers to destroy Super Star Destroyers. Longtime characters like Wedge Antilles and Lando Calrissian go to the belly of the beast to destroy the Death Star in a finale that feels earned and marks the end of an era for Star Wars.
