There’s no denying that Gundam is one of the biggest anime franchises in the world, if not the biggest, and it achieved that honor thanks in large part to its core values as a franchise. While Gundam never tells the same story twice, even when they’re part of the same continuity, every series has maintained the basic philosophy of using over-the-top sci-fi action to draw people into rich, character-driven narratives about the horrors of war and the importance of striving for peace, and because of that, Gundam has never failed to find an audience across almost 50 years.
Another big part of Gundam’s success has always been its commitment to realism; granted, a mecha anime can only be so realistic, but Gundam has always strived for grounded, hard sci-fi whenever possible, to the point of essentially creating the real robot genre, and that’s always been one of the franchise’s major draws. That idea has also come with a very consistent rule across the franchise, but it looks like that rule has finally been broken.
Gundam Officially Breaks Its “No Aliens” Rule With Its New Game
Among the games announced at Summer Game Fest 2026, one of the most surprising was a new Gundam game, Gundam Rogue Orbit. Set for a 2027 release window, the game is said to be a fast-paced, high-mobility action game, a style of gameplay not usually seen in Gundam games, and the initial teaser trailer puts a heavy emphasis on that intense action and what appears to be a thorough narrative accompanying it.
Gundam getting a new game is great, but what’s especially noteworthy is how it goes against one of the major unspoken rules of Gundam anime: the rule about not using aliens. Despite being one of the world’s biggest sci-fi franchises, Gundam has never really made aliens part of the franchise, with Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino even saying it was done to keep the conflict focused on “human systems”, but surprisingly, the villains of Gundam Rogue Orbit appear to be aliens, with the plot synopsis even referring to them as an unknown enemy.
Aliens were briefly referenced in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED and Turn A Gundam, they were the main villains of the Mobile Suit Gundam 00 movie, and even the recent Mobile Suit Gundam Eight manga has aliens as the main antagonists, so it’s not as if Gundam is completely averse to the idea. However, those examples were either harmless references or one-off stories; Gundam Rogue Orbit, on the other hand, is the first time a major mainstream Gundam project will be centered around aliens from the start, and that’s a major shift in how the franchise has operated up until now.
Is Gundam Rogue Orbit The Right Direction For The Franchise?
Gundam Rogue Orbit is a rare Gundam project to heavily feature aliens, and that could have major implications for the future of the franchise. The game is described as both an evolution for longtime fans and a perfect entry point for newcomers, so there’s an implication that it’s being treated as a major Gundam project which, in turn, could set the standard for the rest of the franchise. The most recent entries into the franchise have been nothing if not innovative, so it stands to reason that making aliens a permanent fixture of Gundam could be the next step.

Summer Game Fest 2026 Opening Night Live Updates – All Announcements & New Game Reveals
Summer Game Fest is back with the Opening Night Live event, and Screen Rant is live-blogging all two hours of new game announcements and reveals.
At the same time, though, with how much Gundam’s lack of aliens is tied to the franchise’s elements of realism and political commentary, suddenly making them a mainstay in the franchise would muddy its messaging and identity, ultimately turning Gundam into the sort of sci-fi story it had always avoided being. Even if it’s for the sake of innovation, that wouldn’t be a good direction for the Gundam franchise to go in, so ideally, this is just another one-off thing that won’t change the franchise.
There’s no way of knowing how Gundam Rogue Orbit will change the franchise, if at all, but at the very least, it looks like one of the most exciting new Gundam projects in ages, much of which is owed to the surprise decision to include aliens, and it will be great to see the full extent of its story in 2027.
