4 Fantasy Anime That Couldn’t Beat Frieren If They Tried

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is a game-changer in the fantasy genre because of how it captures the magic of time and memories instead of gunning for one legendary battle after another. Even though the fantasy anime genre is filled with grand quests, ancient evil beings, and more, Frieren still managed to stay on top of the genre.

Over the years, countless fantasy anime have emerged and tried to capture their audience with vast worlds and unforgettable characters, and some of them indeed came close enough. Yet, when compared with Frieren, they pale in comparison. Frieren has set such a high standard in the fantasy genre that most series can never beat it, even if they tried.

Black Clover Focuses on Battles and Loses on the Maturity Front

Black Clover’s forward momentum depends on constant battles. Its chaotic protagonist, Asta, dreams of being the Wizard King, and viewers have heard him shout it out way too many times. Frieren, on the other hand, romanticizes the mundane and the journey itself, instead of battles. The primary driver of Frieren is the initially emotionless elf’s character growth as she slowly learns the weight of memories.

Black Clover’s obsession with relentless action gives it a major disadvantage, since it lacks proper character development and worldbuilding. While every Black Clover character embodies a shonen anime archetype, Frieren’s characters have a layer of humanity that makes them relatable despite being powerful. Black Clover might be able to compete with Frieren in terms of pure adrenaline-rushing action, but never in a thousand years can it match Frieren’s emotional depth and sense of wonder.

Arifureta Is a Power Fantasy that Lacks Emotional Depth

Both Hajime and Frieren are extremely powerful in their own worlds, but Arifureta prioritizes being a power fantasy anime above all, while Frieren built its story around profound themes like loss, grief, and the passage of time. Much of the plot development in Arifureta relies on power progression instead of building meaningful experiences and relationships. The fantasy world of Arifureta simply feels like a backdrop for more battles.

Arifureta spams its plotline with elements that can excite the average isekai lover. It has a quick pace, the plot jumps from battle to battle, the anime heavily uses the harem trope, and the story provides instant gratification instead of creating a strong world and developed characters like Frieren. Arifureta might be an entertaining anime, but its lack of originality leaves it forever in Frieren‘s shadow.

The Misfit of Demon King Academy Mishandles Its Overpowered Protagonist Trope

The Misfit of Demon King Academy is an anime that is unsure of its own goal, so beating Frieren is completely out of the question. Both Anos Voldigoad and Frieren are overpowered characters, but while The Misfit of Demon King Academy shapes its narrative just to help Anos aura-farm, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End’s plot actually develops other characters simultaneously with its protagonist.

At one point, the victories of Anos simply become repetitive, which drives any tension away. Even though the anime tries to balance complex tropes and plot twists, they often feel devoid of any explanation, making the narrative feel more messy than engaging. Of course, one can’t ignore the animation issues that plague The Misfit of Demon King Academy. With its subpar animation and plot, the series can never beat Frieren, not even in its dreams.

Uncle from Another World’s Cringe Comedy and Fan-Service Feel Shallow

Uncle from Another World’s main goal is to make its audience laugh, which makes it fundamentally different from Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End. While the anime is praised for its clever take on the isekai genre, it still contains a few uncomfortable tropes, like the hyper-sexualization of its female characters. The show’s otherwise slice-of-life comedy nature is ruined by the heavy fan service in the anime.

Uncle from Another World might thrive on awkward humor, but Frieren’s heartfelt storytelling can never be compared to it. Above all, Frieren never makes its characters feel cheap by sexualizing them. While Uncle from Another World turns most of its emotional moments into comedy, Frieren’s episodes actually leave a long-lasting impact on fans.
