Another Jump Street movie is on its way.
The Jump Street film series kicked off with 21 Jump Street in 2012. The first movie was based on a TV show of the same name, which was released in 1987 and ran until 1991. The original was created by Patrick Hasburgh and Stephen J. Cannell for Fox. It also featured a massive ensemble cast consisting of Johnny Depp (Tom Hanson), Holly Robinson Peete (Judy Hoffs), Peter DeLuise (Doug Penhall), Dustin Nguyen (Harry Truman Ioki), Richard Grieco (Dennis Booker), Steven Williams (Adam Fuller), Michael Bendetti (Anthony McCann), Michael DeLuise (Officer Joey Penhall), Sal Jenco (Sal Banducci), and Frederic Forrest (Richard Jenko).
According to an exclusive from Variety, another sequel to the Jump Street franchise is currently in development. The upcoming chapter is titled 24 Jump Street, and could potentially see the return of Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum and Ice Cube, as the three stars are currently negotiating their contracts.
Sony Pictures is reportedly moving forward with 24 Jump Street, marking the franchise’s return more than ten years after the last film. Rodney Rothman, who co-wrote the screenplay alongside Hill and Meghan Malloy, will also direct the upcoming sequel. Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who directed the first two Jump Street films, will serve as producers for the new project. Additionally, the original producer, Neal H. Moritz, is returning, too.
21 Jump Street follows police officers Morton Schmidt (Hill) and Greg Jenko (Tatum), who are recruited for an undercover mission that sends them back to high school. The duo is forced to investigate a dangerous drug while trying to act naturally around a new generation of teenagers. The movie also stars Brie Larson (Molly Tracey), Dave Franco (Eric Molson), and Rob Riggle (Mr. Walters).
2012’s 21 Jump Street was generally well-received. On the review site Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an 85% approval rating, with an average score of 7.2. Critics and audiences alike praised the comedic storyline and the performances of the entire cast. The movie was also a huge commercial success, bringing in $201.6 million at the box office off a budget of $54.7 million.
