There is something about role-playing games that just makes gamers giddy. They don’t necessarily provide the immediate dopamine releases of platformers, first-person shooters, and action-adventure titles, but RPGs are still rewarding to play, especially if one gets specific gameplay mechanics drilled into their head.
Unsurprisingly, this means there are plenty of RPGs that gamers have no choice but to play time and time again. Case in point, games like Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Fallout: New Vegas are always fun to return to.
Knights of the Old Republic Will Never Get Old
Knights of the Old Republic is a Star Wars game that has the player character on a quest to defeat the evil Sith Darth Malak. Star Wars fans are bound to enjoy seeing the story unfold, and with a selection of character classes to choose from, they can be fully immersed in the franchise’s world.
As for those who want to play an RPG that happens to use the Star Wars IP, Knights of the Old Republic will still give players reasons to go back to it. Mainly, the game’s combat system uses a d20-esque die system, which means the attacks are determined by dice-based mechanics.
Elden Ring Will Keep Making Players Try Their Hardest
Elden Ring concerns the Tarnished’s quest to find pieces of the titular ring, which were scattered across the Lands Between long ago. This quest requires the Tarnished to take on some of the toughest enemies, with varying difficulty. Make no mistake, Elden Ring is one of the hardest Action RPGs ever made.
Still, the game has plenty going for it that makes players keep on trying until they succeed. There is the character class system, which allows players to pick a variant of the Tarnished that is perfectly equipped to deal with each and every enemy, and the crafting system, which allows players to make powerful weapons to use against enemies.
Fallout: New Vegas Will Never Stop Bringing Players Back
Fallout: New Vegas takes place in the titular city around two hundred years after a devastating nuclear war between the U.S. and China. The player character, a courier attempting to deliver valuable data, finds themselves becoming one of the most powerful protagonists in any Fallout game.
Players can assign a variety of attributes to the courier, and the game’s iron sights system means weapons are easier to aim than in similar games. It’s clear from this that Fallout: New Vegas is the best game in the Fallout franchise.
Disco Elysium’s Case Is Still Hot
Disco Elysium sees players in control of a police detective with amnesia. He investigates a mysterious death, all the while getting acquainted with the many eccentric figures in the titular world of Elysium, and finding that each group he comes across operates on some cynical philosophy.
Beyond the game’s philosophical tone, Disco Elysium is fun to explore in general. This is facilitated by the presence of dialogue trees, which lead the detective to meeting even more unusual characters. Players can also provide the detective with a myriad of attributes, which means the outcome of the game varies depending on how strong or smart he is.
Baldur’s Gate 3 Remains One of the Most Open-Ended RPGs
Baldur’s Gate 3 is a D&D-inspired video game that concerns a parasitic infection that is spreading throughout the Forgotten Realms. Players choose from an array of characters, each of which has more desirable attributes for certain players than others. Once chosen, they can then see what makes the game so perfect.
In addition to borrowing elements from D&D’s fifth edition, including the d20 system, Baldur’s Gate 3 also has an intricate character creation system, which makes the player’s characters feel like their own and allows for nifty abilities during combat. This is not to mention how open-ended the quests are, which allows them to be completed in many different ways.
Cyberpunk 2077 Offers a Massive Open World For RPG Fans
Cyberpunk 2077 has the player character navigating and doing odd jobs around Night City. They end up coming into contact with the long-deceased Johnny Silverhand, who is in the process of erasing the player character’s mind. While attempting to stop Johnny’s influence, players are encouraged to traverse through Night City, which is more than meets the eye.
Playing Cyberpunk 2077 is almost like playing a futuristic version of GTA, although it’s considerably more customizable. To this end, not only are players able to set their character’s stats during creation, but said stats can be enhanced later via special chips that are found in the game. When all is said and done, no one questions that Cyberpunk 2077 is a modern masterpiece.
Chrono Trigger Has Stood the Test of Time Since the SNES Era
Chrono Trigger takes place throughout multiple periods of time. It starts in the year 1000 AD, with starter characters Crono, Marle, and Lucca eventually finding themselves as far back as the Stone Age and as far forward as the year 2300 AD.
Each time period players travel through has its own unique hazards and side-quests, which means players will have to reset their expectations every time. This, in turn, opens up possibilities for multiple endings, and when combined with the game’s rendition of the Active Time Battle system, it proves to be a delightfully chaotic game all around.
Skyrim Defined the Modern Open World RPG
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim sees the player character, who has been dubbed the Dragonborn, ostensibly on a quest to take down a particularly pesky dragon that had been wreaking havoc on the world. Of course, it’s possible to enjoy the game for hundreds of hours without ever engaging with the main story.
Players can choose from a variety of races, and from there, they can stall the story altogether to explore the vast cold world of Skyrim. This isn’t a bad idea, considering players can upgrade their stats by taking on enemies they may encounter. It’s also just enjoyable to interact with the world’s NPCs.
Deus Ex Has a Conspiracy to Keep Players Focused
Deus Ex sees main protagonist JC Denton taking down nefarious forces wanting to plunge society further down its already dilapidated state. The bleak cyberpunk setting is enough to make the game one of the best sci-fi titles ever made, but there are far more reasons to like Deus Ex than just that.
In addition to being an Action RPG, Deus Ex skillfully combines first-person shooter and stealth elements, which transforms the game into an action-thriller of sorts. This keeps with the game’s conspiracy themes and makes it all the more alluring to play.
Persona 5 Is Simply the Best RPG
Persona 5, to put it bluntly, is the best JRPG ever made. This may come off as an exaggeration, but in truth, the game has everything going for it. Mainly, it perfects the innovations introduced in previous Persona games, including the social link system that allows party members to combine their attacks against enemies.
There is also the game’s plot, which is existential in tone, and deals with the clash between reality and fantasy. It is up to the player character and their team of vigilantes to stop the two from converging.
