YouTubers are having their moment on the big screen. The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act has become the latest movie with YouTube roots to find success at the box office.
Glitch Productions, in collaboration with Fathom Entertainment and Piece of Magic Entertainment, revealed that the viral indie animation phenomenon delivered a standout box office debut in both the United States and global markets. During its opening weekend (June 4-7), The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act grossed an estimated $36.6 million from more than 5,700 cinemas in the U.S., Europe, Australia/New Zealand, and Mexico.
Audiences Around the World Are Watching The Last Act
It’s no surprise that The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act found success at the box office. The movie, a feature-length version of the final two episodes of the acclaimed YouTube animated series, set several Fathom Entertainment presales records in the United States.
In fact, several cinemas reported selling out in record time, prompting additional showtimes and an increased theatrical footprint. In the States, The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act earned more than $20.2 million at the box office, while in Europe, it made $12.7 million during its opening weekend.
Other key markets where The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act posted strong results include the UK & Ireland ($3.5 million), Germany ($1.93 million), Poland ($1.05 million), Italy ($905,000) in Italy, Australia ($1.4 million), and Mexico ($2.1 million).
Fathom Entertainment CEO Ray Nutt stated that The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act‘s strong box office debut illustrates “the power and appeal of bringing innovative content with established fanbases to the big screen. Partnering with Glitch for this indie animation project is the latest example of Fathom identifying innovative content creators, such as our partners at Glitch, in redefining the expectations of prime cinematic content.”
YouTubers Are Finding Success on the Big Screen
Created by Gooseworx and produced by Glitch Productions, The Amazing Digital Circus debuted on YouTube in October 2023. It quickly went viral, surpassing 1 billion online views and building a passionate international fanbase.
The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act is just the latest box office hit to be created by YouTubers. Obsession, which was written, directed, and edited by YouTuber Curry Barker, has grossed over 200x its budget at the box office, in addition to receiving praise from Steven Spielberg.
Other recent box office hits from YouTubers include Kane Parson’s Backrooms ($213M), RackaRacka’s Talk to Me ($92M), and Markiplier’s Iron Lung ($51M). Both Obsession and Backrooms have become the highest-grossing films of all time for their respective distributors: Focus Features and A24.
The first eight episodes of The Amazing Digital Circus are available to watch on YouTube, while the ninth and final episode will be released on June 19. For those who want to see the hour-long series finale first, they should head to theaters to see The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act.
