Founded on Aug. 8, 1926, Shueisha was created one year before opening its doors by the major publishing company Shogakukan, which itself was founded in 1922. Initially, Shueisha was dedicated to publishing novels, and it wasn’t long before the company was topping the sales charts with hit titles such as Tantei-ki Dan and Gendai Humor Zenshū. Although the Second World War put a massive strain on the company, it would find new life after pivoting to manga in the late 1940s.
Since then, Shueisha has become the premier manga publisher not just in Japan but across the globe. Shueisha publishes some of the biggest anthology magazines, including the entire Jump family of titles, not to mention dozens more dedicated to genres rangingfrom Shōjo to Josei to Seinen and everything in between. Beyond that, Shueisha continues to publish hundreds of contemporary magazines every year, again touching on just about every topic imaginable.
