The John Wick franchise has come a long way from the original little action movie that could. Under the direction of stuntman-turned-filmmaker Chad Stahelski, the fledgling franchise has blossomed into a billion-dollar juggernaut, launching Keanu Reeves back into superstardom with a role to rival Neo in The Matrix and that acts as an homage to action of all kinds, from Hong Kong classics like the work of John Woo to even the carnage of video games like Hotline Miami. John Wick: Chapter 4 proved to be a high point, seemingly capping off the titular assassin’s journey with a $447.4 million global haul and a fitting farewell, but the world keeps expanding. Last year saw the release of the spin-off Ballerina starring Ana de Armas, but right now, John’s old friend is preparing to take the spotlight.
Filming is currently underway in Budapest and Hong Kong on the sequel/spin-off Caine, centered on Donnie Yen‘s blind assassin. Now that he’s free from the High Table following his bloody, reluctant showdown with John, the film will pick up in the aftermath of Chapter 4 as he returns to his daughter. However, just when he thought he was out, his old life appears to pull him back in. As seen at the end of the last mainline film, Akira is still out for revenge against him after blaming him for the death of her father. Rina Sawayama will be reprising her role alongside Yen, but she’s not the only name that’s been attached to the project.
Earlier this week, the franchise added The Black Phone and How to Train Your Dragon star Mason Thames to the fray in an unknown role, joining fellow newcomer and Stranger Things standout Dacre Montgomery. Now, the film is adding even more firepower in the form of a British acting icon. A new report has confirmed that Bill Nighy has signed on to appear in the spin-off. He brings with him an Oscar-nominated resume spanning from Love Actually to Living and including a fair few memorable animated turns in titles like The Wild Robot, The Boy and the Heron, and Rango. In terms of major franchises, though, his most recognizable appearance has been on the high seas, playing the villainous Davy Jones in Pirates of the Caribbean.
