In 2026, the box office has been wildly unpredictable, with several films becoming unexpected hits. However, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie was always set to become a hit.

The video game adaptation is a sequel to 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which grossed $1.35 billion worldwide and turned into the second-highest-grossing film that year, and the highest video game adaptation. Its sequel is following closely, as Deadline confirmed The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is officially 2026’s first $1 billion film.

The announcement comes shortly after The Super Mario Galaxy Movie defeated 2025’s A Minecraft Movie at the box office, which had grossed $960.3 million. The sequel is now officially the second-highest-grossing video game adaptation of all time.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is currently playing in theaters and is available to rent or purchase on all digital platforms.
