The Batman: Part II Officially Teases The Court of Owls’ Live-Action Movie Debut

Director Matt Reeves’ The Batman: Part II is arguably one of the most anticipated comic book movies of the last 30 years. After the incredible success of 2022’s The Batman, fans of Robert Pattinson’s take on the Caped Crusader have been anxiously awaiting the next chapter in the epic crime saga, and it’s now closer than ever.

With filming now officially underway for the Gotham-set sequel, eagle-eyed fans have noticed an exciting clue that might hint at The Batman: Part II‘s secret villains. With a cryptic behind-the-scenes photo, director Matt Reeves has fueled rumors of the live-action movie debut of the infamous Court of Owls.

Matt Reeves’ Sequel Tease Hints At A Beloved Batman Villain

2022’s The Batman is one of the single greatest comic book movies ever made. Against all odds, it even stands toe-to-toe with the universally beloved Christopher Nolan film, The Dark Knight, as the best interpretation of Batman on-screen. It’s been four years since the first film released, and though fans will have to wait a little longer to finally see The Batman: Part II hit theaters in 2027, behind-the-scenes information is getting die-hard fans even more excited than ever before.

Matt Reeves has revealed a few minor details about his upcoming The Batman sequel, but the film has, for the most part, been kept tightly under wraps. Not much is known about the film’s plot, characters, or even who is playing what role. Sebastian Stan, Scarlett Johansson, Brian Tyree Henry, and others have officially joined the cast, but their roles (though heavily rumored) have not been confirmed.

One of the biggest questions surrounding The Batman: Part II is who exactly the main villain or villains will be. Rumors seem to point towards some interpretation of Two-Face, but a behind-the-scenes image shared by Matt Reeves on social media has introduced a brand-new option, the Court of Owls.

The Court of Owls first appeared in legendary DC Comics writer Scott Snyder’s Batman series during the New 52 era. Though their presence was felt throughout the early issues of Snyder’s run, arguably the prime Court of Owls issues came in Batman issues #8-12. Coincidentally, Matt Reeves’ behind-the-scenes post includes a prominent focus on a clock, which displays the time “8:12.”

The Court of Owls Would Change Reeves’ Gotham City Forever

Although the first The Batman was mostly grounded and realistic, there were certainly hints at more larger-than-life, “comic-booky” concepts. There’s an inherent silliness present in Batman’s stories that Reeves and company smartly embraced while still telling a grounded, character-focused story, and that’s exactly what The Batman: Part II can expand upon.

The history of Gotham City and its most powerful citizens was a major aspect of the first film, and its upcoming sequel could easily take those ideas to their logical conclusion: the Court of Owls. A nefarious secret cabal of powerful Gothamites who use their influence to quietly shape the city’s evolution, the Court of Owls is one of Batman’s most terrifying modern foes.

Lurking in the shadows and utilizing corruption and the threat of violence to keep control of Gotham City, the Court has remained virtually undetected by the city’s occupants over the course of decades. They’re a long-standing group of supremely powerful elites, and they would be the perfect enemy for Robert Pattinson’s Caped Crusader.

With ties to the Wayne family’s history, the origins of Gotham City, and the political goings-on of its contemporary citizens, the Court of Owls would be the perfect group of villains for Matt Reeves’ more grounded Bat-universe.

Because of the casting rumors suggesting that The Batman: Part II will heavily focus on the character of Harvey Dent, as well as his extended family, Matt Reeves’ upcoming film might not end up diving into the Court of Owls as much as some fans might want. However, that doesn’t mean that the secret cult won’t appear in the film.

The Court of Owls is the perfect group to be slowly hinted at across numerous stories before finally being revealed as Batman’s most powerful enemies. If Reeves’ “8:12” Easter egg does connect to the Court of Owls, it could mean that there are going to be hints and whispers about a terrifying group of elite citizens pulling Gotham’s strings, but that they won’t be the focus.

Much like The Batman, which subtly teased characters like Hush, The Batman: Part II could set up a later story — one that could be followed up on in projects like The Batman: Part III or another television tie-in similar to HBO’s The Penguin.

Whatever the case, fans of Scott Snyder’s Batman comics are sure to be pleased with the results of Matt Reeves’ upcoming sequel, as the likelihood of some connection to the Court of Owls is extremely high. Only time will tell whether the group becomes the film’s main villains, but thankfully, Batman fans don’t have much longerto wait for the anticipated sequel.
