Sydney Sweeney’s Sequel to $395M R-Rated Thriller Casts Love Story Breakout Star

Sydney Sweeney has already had an eventful year with the third and final season of Euphoria. However, later this year, she’ll return to her successful R-rated thriller franchise, The Housemaid.

Sweeney rose to fame thanks to her role as Cassie, which led to many projects with critically acclaimed directors and popular stars. But it wasn’t until 2025’s The Housemaid that she found her true franchise, which was a fantastic success. The sequel, The Housemaid’s Secret, will start production this year, and Deadline confirms it added a new member: Love Story star Paul Anthony Kelly.

The actor had his breakout role in Ryan Murphy’s latest show, the FX anthology series Love Story, which followed the romance between John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette. The show was a tremendous hit, and he turned into one of the most sought-after stars. The Housemaid’s Secret marks his feature film debut.

The Housemaid Was a Successful Adaptation

The sequel already scored a release date for Dec. 17, 2027, two years after the first entry. Kelly isn’t the first newcomer, as Kirsten Dunst was first confirmed among the new faces.

The Housemaid was a tremendous success, partly because it already had a massive fanbase. The erotic psychological thriller is based on Freida McFadden’s 2022 novel of the same name, which kickstarted a series. The first installment introduces Millie Calloway, played by Sweeney, who is a young woman on parole for manslaughter, who gets a job as a live-in nanny. However, her new employers aren’t who she initially thought, and they hide many dark secrets.

The novel turned into a bestseller, and its adaptation was a fantastic hit. The Housemaid features a Certified Fresh 74% approval score from critics out of 201 reviews, and an even higher 92% Verified Hot rating from audiences, who hyped the well-written plot and the “wonderful adaptation” of the source material.

This turned it into Sydney Sweeney’s highest-grossing film ever, as it made $400 million on a $35 million budget. Lionsgate, which distributed the film, didn’t waste any time and greenlit The Housemaid’s Secret. Sweeney will reprise her role as Millie in the upcoming sequel, alongside Michele Morrone as Enzo. Director Paul Feig is confirmed to produce, and it’s expected to direct, as well, with Rebecca Sonnenshine returning to pen the script.

Luckily for fans of the film, McFadden wrote a sequel titled The Housemaid’s Secret, which will be the basis for the second installment. The new entry sees Millie find a new job with the Garrick family. While she met Douglas Garrick, a wealthy tech expert, she never met his wife, who is ill. However, once there, she discovers a major secret.

If successful, Sweeney’s franchise could continue with yet another installment, as McFadden released a third entry, The Housemaid Is Watching.

The Housemaid’s Secret hits theaters on Dec. 17, 2027. Until then, The Housemaid is available to stream on Starz.
