Supergirl‘s newest DCU suit reveal changes how her scene in the ending of Superman appears, adding more layers to it and her bond with the Man of Steel himself. As two of DC’s last surviving Kryptonians, Supergirl and Superman have always had an important but complex relationship in every corner of the franchise’s lore, since they’re two people who understand one another on some levels in a way nobody else can, but in many others ways are totally different.
Unsurprisingly, this means there’s much to be gained on a narrative level from delving into the dynamic between the two, and how their drastically different experience of the destruction of Krypton and its aftermath influences them as characters and as heroes throughout the course of their lives.
Naturally, the DCU timeline is also set to capitalize on how interesting and unique the relationship between Superman and Supergirl can be, with the pair having already been shown to have a decidedly interesting report currently in the franchise thanks to Superman‘s ending. That said, the latest reveal about Supergirl’s suit gives this first on-screen interaction a lot of different context that we can understand it through now.
Supergirl’s Suit Backstory Makes Superman’s Ending Even More Tragic
In the newest Supergirl trailer, we get to see a fair bit more of David Corenswet’s Superman and what his role will be like in the movie. Thus far, it appears Kal-El will have a relatively brief role in the film, but the hero is also set to appear far more than it appeared he would in the movie’s very first stages, as the trailer also reveals the story will show how Kara and her cousin met, and when Superman gave Supergirl her own superhero suit.
Seeing Superman give Kara the suit makes the costume substantially more tragic currently, though, since his behavior in the trailers indicates that it’s a gesture Clark makes with the intention of helping his cousin feel welcomed and accepted by him. Having understood her difficulties with adapting to Earth, and considering his suit one of his last ties to his Kryptonian heritage, the decision seems to be one that Superman hopes might provide Kara comfort too.
As such, the fact the two are shown in Superman‘s ending to still be unable to fully understand one another and in a kind of tension with one another is all the sadder.
It’s clear Clark is trying to go out of his way for his one remaining family member, and the fact Kara is shown wearing the suit means she also clearly cares for her cousin and his efforts to support her, though she doesn’t appear to be able to find a fully healthy way to accept them or reach out to him quite yet. Indeed, given Superman also learns Krypton wasn’t as peaceful as he thought in Superman, this tension may linger for some time between the two despite it all.
Superman Giving Supergirl Her Suit Is A Perfect Choice For The DC Universe
With Kryptonian mythos often focusing on the galactic tragedy of Krypton’s fate – and the cavalcade of Kryptonian technology, history, and survivors the franchise has fleshed out over the decades – the more simple, emotive side of Superman and Supergirl’s bond can often get overshadowed.
Having Superman give Supergirl her suit is a great way to cut through the lore often on display here and focus on the personal stakes for the two Kryptonian survivors, and the differing ways in which the two heroes find themselves having to deal with the aftermath of the great tragedy both their lives were changed forever by.
This decision also means that, later down the road when Supergirl has accepted she’s not alone in the world – as may indeed be her arc in the Supergirl movie – the suit she wears will have even more significance. Ultimately, it seems Supergirl’s costume will be something that not just inspires hope in others, but also serves as a symbol of the hope Supergirl learned to embrace after having it presented to her by someone who always believed in her, even if this journey takes some time.
