The Street Fighter franchise is finally heading back to the big screen with an all-new feature film adaptation hitting theaters this fall. A lot of effort was put into the project to make sure that the filmmakers get this one right, and that included collaborating with Street Fighter 6 director Takayuki Nakayama.
Months ahead of the movie’s release, Nakayama spoke about consulting on the project in a recent interview with Dexerto. He admitted that the original script he saw for the film was “pretty rough” and in need of a lot of fine-tuning to become more acceptable. From that point, it took about two years to get the screenplay in shooting shape with a draft that everyone was happy with. Nakayama has since seen a cut of the film that he enjoyed, hinting that fans of the games will similarly be satisfied after all the creative tweaking.
The Movie Underwent Revisions With the Help of Street Fighter 6’s Director
“To be honest, the first script I received was pretty rough — probably exactly the way people are imagining it would be,” Nakayama said. “So, we spent about two years turning it into what it is now. The director is also really great, so we worked together with a great production team, and the actors are all highly motivated. And because I’m directly involved in the process, I have absolutely no worries. I mean, I just watched it and thought it was fun.”
On the fan reactions to the trailers, he added, “Personally, I feel like the reaction has been really positive. You know, adapting a game directly into a video work is incredibly difficult. Everyone has their own personal feelings about the series, so I’m sure there were various opinions out there. But the director and the whole team really took the time to break down what makes Street Fighter tick and reflect on the experiences that shaped us growing up; the people making it are Street Fighter fans themselves.”
The Looks of the Characters Are Very Faithful
The sneak peeks have confirmed that the characters in the Street Fighter film look a lot like what they do in the classic video games, in line with the early 90s vibe. Director Kitao Sakurai has assembled a star-studded cast to bring a slew of familiar fighters to life in the film, including Andrew Koji as Ryu, Noah Centineo as Ken, Callina Liang as Chun-Li, Cody Rhodes as Guile, Jason Momoa as Blanka, 50 Cent as Balrog, Orville Peck as Vega, Roman Reigns as Akuma, and Mel Jarnson as Cammy.
In the movie, which is set in 1993, “Ryu and Ken Masters are thrown back into combat when the mysterious Chun-Li recruits them for the next World Warrior Tournament: a brutal clash of fists, fate, and fury. But behind this battle royale lies a deadly conspiracy that forces them to face off against each other and the demons of their past. And if they don’t, it’s GAME OVER!”
Street Fighter will be released in movie theaters on Oct. 16, 2026.
