Star Trek recently announced a major new series starring Picard’s most underrated character. The conclusion of Star Trek: Picard saw Seven of Nine take command of the Enterprise, leaving fans begging for a spin-off starring the former Borg drone turned Starfleet hero. Now, three years after Picard ended, IDW is making fans’ dreams come true.
Announced earlier today via Gizmodo, IDW Publishing will release Star Trek, a new ongoing series written by Christopher Cantwell and drawn by Dennis Menheere.
Although exact details are still under wraps, the book sees Seven and the crew of the Enterprise NCC-1701-G travel to a “hidden region of space” to confront a massive threat to the Federation.
Seven of Nine is a Star Trek Icon
Seven of Nine’s Character Arc is One of Star Trek’s Best
Seven of Nine’s arc in the Star Trek universe was one of the franchise’s best. Introduced at the end of Voyager’s third season, Seven of Nine progressed from a Borg drone to a valued member of the crew. Seven found a home aboard Voyager, but when she returned to the Alpha Quadrant, she got a less-than-warm reception.
After a stint with the vigilante group, the Fenris Rangers, Seven of Nine would eventually be admitted to Starfleet. She quickly ascended the ranks, becoming the First Officer aboard the USS Titan, under Captain Liam Shaw. After the final defeat of the Borg and Shaw’s death during the crisis, Seven was awarded command of the Titan, which was rechristened as the Enterprise.
Star Trek Fans Have Been Begging for a Seven of Nine Spin-Off
Star Trek: Legacy Would Be a Massive Hit for Paramount
The final ten minutes of Star Trek: Picard’s series finale felt more like a set-up for a spin-off starring Seven of Nine than it did a conclusion to The Next Generation. This did not go lost on fans, who have been demanding a new show that would follow Seven and her crew, as they live up to the Enterprise legacy.
It has been over three years since Star Trek: Picard went off the air, and fans are still waiting for any news about a Seven-fronted show, yet there seems to be little interest on Paramount’s part.
It has been over three years since Star Trek: Picard went off the air, and fans are still waiting for any news about a Seven-fronted show, yet there seems to be little interest on Paramount’s part. Fans regularly take to social media to ask Paramount about the show, which has acquired the title Star Trek: Legacy.
IDW Answered the Call and Gave Seven of Nine Her Own Star Trek Series
Star Trek Writer Christopher Cantwell is No Stranger to the Franchise
And now, IDW is giving Star Trek fans their wish with a new ongoing series that picks up where Picard season three left off. IDW did not reveal much about the book beyond the basics, but it would appear Seven and the Enterprise are off to save the Federation once again, in an entirely new region of space.
The new adjective-less Star Trek title is in good creative hands. Writer Christopher Cantwell is no stranger to the franchise. A life-long Star Trek fan, Cantwell has had excellent runs on Doctor Doom and Iron Man. He also wrote two Star Trek titles: Defiant, and the recently concluded Redshirts miniseries.
IDW upped the ante for Star Trek comics with their offerings of the past four years. Star Trek and Star Trek: Defiant were glorious love letters to the franchise and were packed with high-stakes stories and mind-bending action. IDW is keeping this streak alive with the excellent The Last Starship, and Star Trek will be another feather in the cap.
Star Trek’s 60th Anniversary Celebration Has Been Mishandled
Star Trek celebrates its 60th anniversary this year, and it began with a great deal of promise: Starfleet Academy was set to premiere and a new season of Strange New Worlds was on the horizon. The franchise received a float at the Tournament of Roses Parade, the first time it had been honored as such. IDW Publishing was getting into the act as well with various specials and miniseries, in addition to its ongoing Star Trek: The Last Starship. The new adjective-less Star Trek title was another win for the franchise too.
Paramount revealed Strange New Worlds would end with season five, and all in-development shows were terminated as well, which would include the hypothetical Star Trek: Legacy as well.
Then, it all came crashing down a few months ago. Starfleet Academy was canceled prematurely, thanks in part to an online hate campaign. Paramount revealed Strange New Worlds would end with season five, and all in-development shows were terminated as well, which would include the hypothetical Star Trek: Legacy as well.
Star Trek, and Seven of Nine Are Carrying the Weight of the Franchise
The mishandling of Star Trek’s 60th anniversary on television makes the work of the comics even more important. The Star Trek comics, and novels, will keep the franchise alive in this “wilderness phase,” until it can return to audiences in theaters or on television. IDW’s Star Trek comic, featuring Captain Seven of Nine, will become the standard-bearer. Picard’s most underrated character is returning to give fans the Star Trek series they deserve.
