Sherlock Alum’s New Detective Mystery Movie Is Officially Releasing In The United States Later This Year

Moviegoers in the United States can now mark in their 2026 calendars when Sherlock alum Martin Freeman’s new detective mystery movie will arrive.

Though his time playing John Watson opposite Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock Holmes ended nearly a decade ago, Freeman hasn’t strayed from mystery-centric movies and other TV shows since then. Flavia, his latest foray into the genre, sees him performing in another adaptation of a literary property, albeit one that’s more family-friendly than Sherlock. Following the movie’s April 4 opening in the United Kingdom, its U.S. release date has officially been set.

Deadline reports that Flavia will open in domestic theaters on Friday, December 4. This comes as a result of Magenta Light Pictures acquiring the movie’s theatrical rights in the United States and numerous other territories, including Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and China. Flavia comes out the same day as the David Harbour-led Violent Knight 2, and two days after Alan Ritchson and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s The Man with the Bag releases on Prime Video.

Adapting The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie: A Flavia de Luce Mystery, the first entry in the book series authored by Alan Bradley, Flavia follows the eleven-year-old title protagonist, an “amateur detective” and “master poisoner” played by Molly Belle Wright, grappling with a murder that takes place at her family’s mansion. When her father, played by Freeman, is accused of the crime, the girl, as described in the official synopsis, “dives into her own wild and fearless investigation, unearthing long-held family secrets and pitting herself against the true murderer.”

Wright and Freeman are joined in the Flavia cast by Ariella Glaser, Toby Jones, Karan Gill, Annette Badland, Jonathan Pryce, Tallulah Conabeare, Zach Colton, and Max Cortezi. Bharat Nalluri, known for movies like Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day and The Man Who Invented Christmas, directed the Sky Original feature. Susan Coyne, who penned the latter movie, as well as episodes of TV shows like Mozart in the Jungle and The Best Laid Plans, wrote the screenplay.

Flavia’s family-adventure vibe is a sharp contrast from the kind of mystery and crime-focused projects that Freeman has previously starred in. Along with the aforementioned Sherlock, he played Lester Nygaard in the first season of FX’s Fargo. That performance netted him Golden Globe and Emmy nominations, among other accolades. This past January, Freeman also starred in Netflix’s Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials, which adapted the title author’s 1929 novel The Seven Dials Mystery, and co-starred Mia McKenna-Bruce, Edward Bluemel, Iain Glen, and Helena Bonham Carter.

Freeman’s other recent credits, which accompany his top IMDB-rated movies, include reprising Everett Ross in the Marvel Cinematic Universe projects Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Secret Invasion, the dark comedy series Breeders, the British procedural The Responder, and the erotic thriller Miller’s Girl. Along with Flavia’s winter release in the United States, the actor will also be seen with Josh Hutcherson and Malin Akerman in the comedy Let’s Love, directed and written by Jamie Adams. Unlike Flavia, it doesn’t have a release date yet.
