The remake of Resident Evil 4 now has an incredible co-op mode, thanks to the tireless efforts of modders. The RE4 remake was released in 2023, updating the 2005 original with some fancier visuals, story tweaks, and gameplay adjustments. Some critics praised its changes, although some critiqued it for removing some of the fun and friction from the original RE4.
One thing the Resident Evil remakes have rarely dipped its toes into, though, is co-op. Although the series has a history with cooperative gameplay (RE5 and 5 had pretty significant co-op campaigns), the remakes haven’t really touched it, at least not in the main campaign. Now, fans have taken matters into their own hands with a multiplayer mod.
Nexus Mods user claybtv released a multiplayer mod for the Resident Evil 4 remake last week, and you can download and check it out for free right now (spotted by Dark Side of Gaming). The mod syncs your game with another player’s over the internet, allowing you to play through the entirety of the campaign together. There’s even a messaging system that allows you to coordinate, if need be.
This mod is only in beta, and does have several known issues. You’ll probably experience lag and some choppy animations throughout, and there’s no way to open your inventory without pausing it for your co-op partners as well.
Players can leave bug reports on the mod’s Nexus page, which will presumably be addressed in future updates. The first of these updates was released on June 15, repairing a server crash issue and offering a fix for a bug that left some players staring at a totally blank screen. Claybtv has also announced that they’re working on a LAN multiplayer version to allow you to play with friends in the same room.
You can choose from a roster of RE4 characters so that you don’t have two Leons running around at all times. That’ll help with the realism aspect, but the jury’s still out on what co-op does to RE4‘s game balance.
That’s not the only custom content for RE4 worth checking out: a first-person mod is also available, if you want to make it feel more like Biohazard and Village. A quick browse on the game’s Nexus homepage reveals new melee animations for Leon, an auto-pickup option for items, and even a mod that changes your first aid spray into cans of Four Loko, if you’re so inclined. All of these can help the Resident Evil 4 remake feel fresh, no matter what your level of experience with it.
