Project Hail Mary Is Officially Heading to Streaming

Project Hail Mary was one of the biggest surprises at the box office this year. Without being part of a pre-existing movie franchise, the film completely shattered box office expectations.

Now, it’s officially heading to streaming. After extending its time in theaters thanks to its popularity, Amazon MGM Studios confirmed that Project Hail Mary is heading to MGM+ on June 18.

The release comes almost three months after its theatrical release on Mar. 20, and over a month since it dropped on digital platforms. After dominating the box office charts, Project Hail Mary turned into a digital hit, instantly topping the charts following its quiet drop.

On June 10, the sci-fi film is also the No. 1 movie on Amazon, Apple TV Store, and Google worldwide. In the U.S., it has just dropped to third place on the Apple TV Store following the release of the biopic Michael and Mortal Kombat II, after almost 30 days at the top of the charts.

What Happens in Project Hail Mary?

The sci-fi film follows Ryland Grace, a former scientist who is now a middle school teacher. Following one of his papers, the government pulls him into a secret project that ends with him waking up on a spaceship alone, with no memories of what happened.

As Grace starts remembering, he realizes he is the Earth’s last hope in fixing what’s killing the sun before humanity is wiped completely. During his journey in space, he realizes he’s not alone, and kicks off a high-stakes journey in saving the universe with his new alien friend.

Project Hail Mary comes from The Martian author Andy Weir, and it’s based on his 2021 award-winning novel. Drew Goddard, who wrote the script for The Martian, returned to pen the story, which had Phil Lord and Christopher Miller at the helm.

Project Hail Mary is largely a one-man show, with Ryan Gosling as Ryland Grace, James Ortiz as Rocky, and an unexpected Meryl Streep voice cameo. Other cast members include Sandra Hüller as Eva Stratt and Lionel Boyce as Carl.

The sci-fi film comes from Amazon MGM Studios, as Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer got the rights for the novel in March 2020 even before the novel was published. Ryan Gosling was already attached to star in and produce.

The movie had a significant $200 million budget, but it turned into Amazon’s highest-grossing film after ending its run with $681 million worldwide. At the time of writing, Project Hail Mary is the third-highest-grossing movie of the year, just behind the billion-dollar The Super Mario Galaxy and Michael.

It was also a major success with critics, as it features a Certified Fresh 94% approval score out of 411 reviews, and a Verified Hot 95% rating from moviegoers. They praised Gosling’s performance, the heartwarming friendship story, and the fantastic visual effects that made it perfect for a big-screen watch.

Project Hail Mary drops on MGM+ on June 18.
