Prime Video Is Officially Rebooting One Of The Greatest Action Movie Franchises Ever

Amazon MGM Studios has upped its game in the movie space and delivered many great examples, especially in the action space with movies like Jack Ryan: Ghost War. But now that James Bond is in the hands of Amazon, it marks a new era for 007, as a brand-new film directed by Denis Villeneuve is underway.

It’s unclear who will play 007 or even what the film will be about, but everything points to a fresh start for the super spy. After over 50 years of delivering fun and exciting movies, seeing a new era for the character will be exciting and is shaping up to be the biggest action movie reboot ever.

James Bond Defined Spy Cinema For Decades

Created by Ian Fleming, James Bond is a spy who works for British Intelligence in MI6 and travels to various locations to stop outlandish villains from taking over or destroying the world. On the way, he often meets beautiful women, gets fun gadgets, and drives cool cars, making him the most famous spy of literature and cinema.

Since the ’60s, James Bond has been played by many different actors, from Sean Connery to Daniel Craig, who all brought something unique to the role that made their films stand out. This has led to constant debates over who the best Bond is and which one had the better movies. In that time, James Bond has also defined spy cinema in major ways.

It’s hard to avoid the tropes that Bond movies pioneered, and even franchises like Mission: Impossible had to move far and away from the tropes of James Bond only to still lean on cool gadgets and undercover work at lavish galas. In the end, James Bond has represented everything great about the subgenre and action as a whole.

Movies like Kingsman: The Secret Service highlighted the incredulous nature of James Bond films without leaning into a complete parody, and it worked well. The Austin Powers movies aimed to spoof the franchise entirely. Nevertheless, they all serve to flatter the legacy James Bond has fostered as a spy franchise that continues to define cinema. But with a fresh start on the table, it’s now a matter of how the next evolution can embrace the past while delivering something new to such a classic franchise.

As of now, Amazon MGM Studios has been tight-lipped about what’s to come for this new era of James Bond, but it’s confirmed that Dune Director Denis Villeneuve will be helming the next film in the series. While he’s most popular right now for delivering a great sci-fi epic with Dune, Villeneuve has already proven he can take on tactical action thanks to his work on Sicario.

With Daniel Craig’s era of Bond closing definitively with the death of the character, it also means that Amazon MGM Studios can introduce audiences to a fresh version of Bond on the younger side. It’s long been rumored the next Bond will be considerably younger than those that came before, and seeing that the 007: First Light game also explores a younger James Bond, it’s safe to assume the rumors are true.

Amazon MGM Studios recently stated that they have news coming but are underway in finding the next name to take on the designation of 007. While it’s not much information to go on, it’s great to see so much care taken to ensure such an iconic character in fiction is given his dues. But that also means that there will be a long news drought regarding any future updates on the 26th film in the James Bond series.

Since the character hit the big screen in Dr. No, James Bond has never had an official reboot, though Casino Royale (2006) could be viewed as one, as it started with Bond earning his 00 status. Everything felt cohesive and somewhat connected. But to formally announce a fresh start of this caliber feels new for the franchise and could lead to some big surprises. While many would champion First Light actor Patrick Gibson for the role, it’s smart to, at the very least, angle for an actor who could play the role for a long time.

Amazon MGM Studios’ James Bond Has to Avoid Its Biggest Problems

With the fact that James Bond has been around for so many decades and has always been the focus of hyper-masculine ideals, there have been more than a few elements that make his movies hard to watch in the modern age. From the way the films treated women to Bond’s questionable choices in representing cultures (as seen in You Only Live Twice), the films have been a minefield for some time.

Thankfully, recent films have done better at both showing Bond in a more admirable light while also giving his character and the movies he is tied to even more depth. It’s why films like Skyfall and No Time to Die left such an impression on the franchise and fueled Amazon MGM Studios’ future endeavors.

A new era of James Bond is here, and it marks the perfect time for the series to not only avoid its pitfalls altogether but also set better trends that give Bond more character than ever. This can start by having him still be charming to those around him, but the women he meets can also have agency of their own, as shown already in 007: First Light.

It’s a chance to see James Bond as more than a one-dimensional super spy that doesn’t say much and is quick to kill. Everything that’s made him an icon can stay, and now Amazon MGM Studios can set him up for future success with a personality that feels new and grounded.

James Bond can and should be everything viewers remember about the character, but with a reboot, there’s room for improvisation and experimentation. With a character that has as much history as James Bond, it’s not as risky to reinvent the wheel and find new and even greater success through this new era.
