Preorders went live for the Pokémon Trading Card Game: Pitch Black set, a part of the current Mega Evolution series, testing Pokémon Center’s new lottery system. Around the same time, several Pitch Black cards appeared online (and in English), giving us a new glimpse at the upcoming TCG expansion. This includes the latest batch of Black Star Promo Cards that will be releasing inside the pre-release Build & Battle Boxes.
The new cards, which were revealed by PokeBeach this week, include the English versions of the four promo cards that are part of Pitch Black‘s pre-release, which will run from July 4 until July 12, 2026. Those cards are:
- Miraidon
- Slowbro
- Dhelmise
- Bastiodon
Each card comes stamped with the Pitch Black logo in the bottom-right corner of the card art, and it also includes the special Black Star promo symbol beside the card’s numbering. There’s nothing out of the ordinary here. However, fans are pretty divided on one of the new cards, which is proving to be surprisingly controversial already.
The problem is with the Dhelmise card, which you can view above. More specifically, it’s with the ability that’s called “Hide ‘n’ Sneak” in English. This was translated as “Ghost Veil” from the Japanese card, and fans are torn over which name sounds cooler. It’s already causing quite the debate in PokeBeach’s comments section.
“Hide n’ Sneak is such a goofy name lol, Ghost Veil was way cooler,” reads one of the comments.
“Hide n sneak is not it,” reads another.
Not everyone agreed, of course: “Ghost Veil is such a lame attack/ability name.”
Perhaps the whole debate is best conveyed by the duality of these two comments: “Hide ‘n Sneak. Kinda fire, ngl,” with the direct response, “kinda a** ngl.”
To be clear, no one really seems to have a problem with the ability itself. Most folks just don’t like the new ability name. It’s understandable, since many fans have been thinking of it as “Ghost Veil” for quite some time. Despite a few defenders, it seems like most people are underwhelmed by the “Hide ‘n’ Sneak” name.
There are a number of cards confirmed for Pitch Black already, but this Dhelmise card is the first one I’ve seen that’s caused this much of a controversy. Pokémon is known for being silly at times, so I’m not personally bothered by the new ability name. Still, I’d have to agree with most people that “Ghost Veil” just sounds cooler. The new Pokémon Trading Card Game: Pitch Black set will release on July 17, 2026, in the U.S. The pre-release period starts July 4, if you’d like to nab a Dhemise card for yourself.
